Jennie Eliza Raftshol .ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Jennie Raftshol, 94, a resident of Leelanau County, entered heaven Sunday morning, July 19, 2009, at the home of her daughter and husband, Anne Marie and Michael Emery.

Jennie was born on Feb. 17, 1915, to the late Clark and Bessie (Ottney) Tillinghast in Bethel, Minn. Jennie married Rudolph Raftshol Sept. 18, 1935, in Independence, Iowa.

Jennie has five children; her son, Rudolph "Rudy" (Michelle) Raftshol of Plymouth, Minn.; and daughters, Meredith (Robert) Amon of Portland, Ore., Sharon (Peter) Schumer of Marquette, Anne Marie Raftshol (Michael Emery) of Albuquerque, N.M., and Christine (William) Vogelsang of Escondido, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Malaika Amon, David Schumer, Melissa and Meredith Emery, Carrie Anne, Jacob and Noah Vogelsang, and Adam and Scott Raftshol; five great-grandchildren, Akira, Atticus, Eloise Bregman, Aaron and Megan Schumer; a sister, Edith Paulson of Harpers Ferry, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Lois Raftshol of Bend, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudy, in 1996; her parents; three brothers, Ray, Syrille and George; and her sister, Maybelle Derhammer.

Jennie loved her Lord Jesus and was a longtime active and supportive member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Traverse City. She was a member of and officer of the E.L.C.W., as well as chairperson of foreign missions, a charter member of Sons of Norway and a member of Church Women United. Jennie also worshiped at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Suttons Bay and All Saints Lutheran Church in Albuquerque, N.M.

She enjoyed being with her family, traveling, reading, knitting and crocheting, and watching all kinds of birds and nature.

Visitation for friends and family will be from 4:30 until 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. A memorial service will take place on Friday, July 31, at 2 p.m., at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Traverse City, with the Rev. William Vogelsang officiating. Burial will be at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be given to a Christian missionary program, to Lutheran World Relief or to a hospice or charity of your choosing.
