Maybelle Derhammer, age 95 of Anamosa, died Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at the Mechanicsville Care Center following a brief illness.
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 Saturday morning, November 24, 2007 at the First Congregational Church, Anamosa with interment in the Quasqueton Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 until 8 Friday at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa. Rev. Bryan Crousore will officiate at the services. Surviving are eight children, Ellen Jane Erb, Alhambra, California, Sally Osterkamp, Anamosa, Clark Bud (Judy) Derhammer, Cedar Rapids, Karen Johnson, McKinney, Texas, David (Fran) Derhammer, Volga City, Leaetta (Jon) Wacker, Grants Pass, Oregon, Rudy (Suky) Derhammer, Darien, Georgia, Jennie Lynn, (Jim) Kovarik, Spring Valley, Minnesota, 25 Grandchildren, 41 great-Grandchildren and 8 great-great-Grandchildren, 2 sisters, Jennie Raftshol, Travers City, Michigan, Edith Paulson, Harpers Ferry and her roommate Emma Meyers, Mechanicsville.
Maybelle Ellen Tillinghast was born November 18, 1912 at Decorah, Iowa. She was the daughter of Clark George and Bessie Ellen Otney, Tillinghast. She received her education in the Decorah area schools. Maybelle then went to work as a nanny and housekeeper in Minneapolis and Milwaukee. Maybelle and David Daniel Derhammer were married near Chicago, Illinois in October of 1937. The couple live in Waukesha, Wisconsin and later moved to Decorah and then back to the greater Milwaukee area. They moved to Quasqueton, Iowa where they made their home when David died in 1975. Maybelle move to Decorah where she cared for her father and brother until their deaths. She lived for 15 years in Elkader before moving to Anamosa. Maybelle had only lived in the care center for the past 14 months.
Maybelle became Joy the Clown at the age of 79. She visited care centers and other locations spreading a little cheer where ever she went. She attended many of the Lutheran Ministry Clown Conventions. She was also the Queen Bee of the Velvet Hammer Red Hat Society and the Royal Neighbors. She also enjoyed fishing, playing cards and many bus trips around the country.
