Fred G. Holland, age 83 of Decorah, Iowa, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at his home following a sudden illness.
Funeral Mass is on Saturday, May 22, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah by the Rev. Gary F. Krapfl, with burial in .
Visitation is on Friday, May 21, 2004 from 4:00-8:00 P.M. at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, where there will be a parish scripture service at 6:30 P.M. Friday.
Frederick George Holland was born December 17, 1920 near Decorah, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Mary (Herold) Holland. Fred attended Decorah Community Schools, graduating in 1938.
Fred was united in marriage with Marilyn Birr Miller on May 19, 1962 at her parent’s home in Charles City, Iowa. They lived for 42 years in their home in rural Decorah, on the farm where Fred was born. To their union three children were born: Sally, Stephen, and William.
Fred and his brother Paul farmed and also did custom farming during World War II. After his brother Harold returned from the war, Fred, Harold, Paul and Frank established Holland Brothers Construction Company. Fred and his brothers performed the grading work during construction on many of the highways in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. He served as Secretary/Treasurer of the company until he retired in 1991 after surviving a brain aneurysm.
Fred was a life-long farmer, milking up to 42 head of cattle and later finishing about 500 beef steers per year. He enjoyed coaching 4-H softball, going fishing, spending time with his family and friends. He had a special love for children. Fred served on the Decorah Community School District Board of Education from 1978-1984. He was a life long member of St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah; a member of the Elks Club; Oneota Golf and Country Club; and Associated General Contractors of Iowa.
Fred died on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at his home at the age of 83 following a sudden illness.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Miller Holland of Decorah; two sons, Stephen Holland and his wife Hilary McCormick of Greensboro, NC. and William “Bill” and his wife Sherri of Decorah, IA.; a daughter, Sally Holland of Nashville, TN.; two grandchildren, Joseph Holland and Laurel Holland; one brother, Frank Holland and his wife Vicki of Decorah, IA and a sister-in-law, Rose Mary Holland of Decorah.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Paul and Harold; and a sister, Madonna Bolstad.
