Lavanda I. Hanson, age 77, of Decorah, Iowa, died Tuesday, December 14, 2004 at Oneota Riverview Care Facility in Decorah.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, December 17, 2004 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, by Rev. H.G. Engebretson and Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen. Burial will be in Glenwood East Cemetery in rural Decorah. Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Thursday, December 16, 2004 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa and an hour prior to the services on Friday at the church.
Lavanda Irene Hanson was born November 4, 1927, in her parents home in Clermont, Iowa, the youngest daughter of George and Theresa (Peterson) Schave. She was baptized January 18, 1928 by Rev. Gunsten near Clermont, and later confirmed on May 17, 1942 at Glenwood Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, Iowa. Lavanda was educated in Country School near Clermont. Then later in life, she she earned her G.E.D. and was very proud of her accomplishment.
She was united in marriage with Howard P. Hanson on February 3, 1946 at Glenwood Lutheran Church in rural Decorah. The couple made their home on Howard’s home farm until moving to Decorah in 1983.
Lavanda was employed by Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital for over 33 years, working as a Nurse’s Aide and later as a ward clerk. She also did volunteer work at the hospital. Lavanda was a member of Glenwood Lutheran Church for many years and then joined First Lutheran Church in Decorah. She served as President of Glenwood Lutheran Ladies Aid and was active in her church circle. She and Howard loved dancing to the “Toe Tappers” music, traveling and playing cards. She also bowled in the Red Smock League. She became a resident of Oneota Riverview Care Facility on December 31, 2003.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard on June 14 1995; three sisters, Elsie Brainard Thompson, Vivian Dietrich, Bernice McIntosh, and a son-in-law, Mark Dynes.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara (John) Headington of Decorah; three grandsons, Phillip (Angie) Headington, Curtis Headington and his fiance’ Kelly Lansing, Joseph Headington; three great-grandchildren, Cole Headington, Dawson Headington and Dahlyn Sue Headington; nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, many special friends and her much loved cat Charlie.
Memorials may be directed to Oneota Riverview Care Facility; Hospice of Winneshiek County; Ossian Senior Hospice; or Glenwood Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund.
