Hazel C. Dahlquist, age 97, of Decorah, Iowa, died Tuesday, November 22, 2005 at Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home in Decorah following a brief illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, November 26, 2005 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah by Rev. Marion Pruitt Miller, with burial in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah.

Friends may call from 1:00 P.M. until the services on Saturday at the church. Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah is in charge of the arrangements.

Hazel Clara Dahlquist was born June 14, 1908 in Hesper, Iowa, the daughter of Burre and Hilda (Thingvold) Burreson. She was baptized and confirmed at Hesper Lutheran Church. She graduated from Decorah High School with the Class of 1926. Hazel attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN for two years and then attended Winona State Teacher’s College in Winona, MN. She earned her Bachelors of Arts degree from Luther College in 1950.

She was united in marriage with Dr. Ralph M. Dahlquist on August 10, 1935 in New Jersey. To this union, two children were born: Joan and Marc.

Hazel taught school for many years. She began her career in Lime Springs, Iowa, teaching 3rd and 4th grades from 1931-1935. Hazel raised her family and then returned to teaching at the Rixey School in Las Animas, CO from 1963-1965, then at Kenyon Elementary School in Kenyon, MN from 1965-1966. Hazel taught 4th grade in the Decorah Schools from 1966 until her retirement in 1973.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Decorah. She was an avid bridge player. Hazel became a resident of the Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home on May 9, 2000.

Survivors include a daughter, Joan Nolte of Shoreview, MN; a son, Marc (Donna) Dahlquist of Aiken, SC; five grandchildren, Kristin Sperry of St. Paul, MN, Marc A. Dahlquist of Minneapolis, MN, Michael (Amy) Dahlquist of Maple Grove, MN, Brent (Chris) Dahlquist of Elkhorn, NE, Eric (Desiree) Dahlquist of West Des Moines, IA; five great grandchildren, Nicole and Alex Sperry, McKenzie Dahlquist, Spencer Dahlquist, Lathan Dahlquist; a sister, Ella Reiter of Fairmont, MN and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ralph on May 1, 1965; a grandson, William Nolte on September 30, 1990; and two sisters, Selma Sorlien and Agnes Wennes.

In lieu of flowers, memorials could be given to Barthell Eastern Star Nursing Home.
