John A. Cronin, age 76 of Decorah, died unexpectedly on Friday, May 6, 2005 following an accident at his home.

Mass of Christian Burial is at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 10, 2005 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah, IA by Rev. Gary F. Krapfl, with burial in Phelps Cemetery in Decorah, with full military honors.

Visitation is on Monday, May 9, 2005 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, with a Prayer Vigil Service at 6:00 p.m., and on Tuesday after 10:00 a.m. at the Church.

John Aloysius Cronin was born March 30, 1929 in Waucoma, IA, the son of John A. and Mae B. (Carolan) Cronin. He was educated in the Decorah schools and then attended Loras Academy in Dubuque, IA.

He was united in marriage with Verna JoAnn Rosendahl on December 29, 1950 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah. To this union two sons were born: Terry and Jeff.

John served in the United States Air Force in Okinawa, Japan, Texas and Louisiana.

John was a salesman and then a bus driver for Scenic Hawkeye Stages in Decorah. He and Verna then owned and operated the Lantern Restaurant in Decorah, the Corner Bar, and finally Asphalt Services for many years. He then sold the business to the Fred Carlson Company where he continued to work until his retirement in 1999.

He was a member of St Benedict Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Elks Club, the VFW and Silvercrest Golf & Country Club for many years. John loved to visit with people and enjoyed making them feel good about themselves. He had a great sense of humor and could fill a room with laughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Verna, on January 28, 2004; his son, Terry, on October 7, 1960; and 2 brothers: Harold and Phillip Cronin.

He is survived by his son, Jeff (Nancy Graves) Cronin of Minneapolis, MN; two grandchildren: Nora and Phillip Cronin of Minneapolis; one sister: Mary Henry of Decorah; one brother: Myles (Maxine) Cronin of Des Moines, IA; two uncles: Sylvester (Vivian) Carolan of Decorah and Melvin (Ruth) Carolan of Austin, MN; and by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Winneshiek County Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
