Lloyd E. Bergan, age 97, of Ridgeway, Iowa, died Sunday, November 6, 2005 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, November 10, 2005 at Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway, by Rev. Phillip Olson and Rev. Ginny Olson, with burial in United Lutheran Cemetery in rural Ridgeway.
Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Wednesday at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and an hour prior to the services on Thursday at the church.
Lloyd Earl Bergan was born July 2, 1908 at home in Madison Township, Winneshiek County, IA, the son of Nels and Elena (Larson) Bergan. He attended the rural schools of Madison Township. Lloyd was baptized in 1908 and confirmed on November 12, 1922 at Ridgeway United Lutheran Church.
Lloyd was born and raised on the family farm which was started in 1883. During the Great Depression Lloyd and his brother traveled to Little Rock, CA where they put in irrigation pipes and worked in orchards for several people including Noel & Wallace Berry. Upon his father’s death in 1934, Lloyd returned to Madison Township where he assumed the responsibilities of running the family farm. He had a thrashing machine which he often used to help all the neighbors with their thrashing until 1969. Lloyd was always willing to help his friends and neighbors.
On February 9, 1940 Lloyd was united in marriage with Jeanette Halverson in Decorah, IA. To this union four children were born: Roger, Carol, Lorraine and Jane.
Lloyd was a very active member of Ridgeway United Lutheran Church, then Peace Lutheran Church. He served on the council and was treasurer, as well as serving on the Cemetery Board. He was a member of Farm Bureau and NFO.
He became a resident of the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah in July 2004.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers: Leander Bergan, Carl Bergan and Roy Francis Bergan; 3 sisters: Ina Leona Houck, Lillian Bergan and Ina Kathleen Bergan in infancy; and 2 half-sisters: Emma Bergan and Ada Bergan in infancy.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanette of Ridgeway; his son, Roger Bergan of Ridgeway; his 3 daughters: Carol (Kenneth) Nesvik of Manchester, TN, Lorraine (Richard) Hendrickson of Ossian, IA, and Jane Bergan of Ridgeway; 6 grandchildren: Terry (Dawn) Bergan of Arlington, TX, Jason (Holly) Bergan of Grand Prairie, TX, Linda Nesvik and Cindy Nesvik, both of Murfreesboro, TN, Heather (Matthew) Hendrickson Kincade of Green Bay, WI, and Nathan Hendrickson of Chandler, AZ; and 3 great-grandchildren: Christian Gunnar Bergan and Hayden & Brennan Kincade.
