Philip A. “Phil” Bergan, age 57 of Cresco, Iowa, died Tuesday, July 6, 2004 at his home following a sudden illness.

Funeral Service is on Friday, July 9, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at Orleans Lutheran Church, rural Ridgeway, Iowa by Rev. Phillip and Rev. Ginny Olson with burial in Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa.

Visitation is on Thursday, July 8, 2004 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Friday after 10:00 am at the church.

Philip Alan “Phil” Bergan was born October 18, 1946 at the hospital in Decorah, Iowa, the son of Orvin A. and Doris M. (Yarwood) Bergan. He was christened on November 2, 1946 by Rev. Sundby at Decorah Lutheran Church. Phil confirmed his faith also at Decorah Lutheran Church in October, 1962. Phil grew up in Decorah and graduated from Decorah High School with the Class of 1964.

He was united in marriage with Cheryl L. Bolson in November, 1964 at Big Canoe Lutheran Church in rural Decorah. They were later divorced. He married Judy M. McIntyre on May 22, 1976 in Fountain, Minnesota.

Phil worked for a time at Luther College in the food service department and later worked as a paving inspector for Fred Carlson, Co., both in Decorah. Most recently, Phil was a truck driver for Alum-Line Industries in Cresco. Phil also worked as a part-time bus driver for the Howard-Winneshiek School District. He retired due to health issues in October 2002.

Phil was a member of Orleans Lutheran Church in rural Ridgeway, Iowa, where he served as a Council Member and as Congregational Treasurer. As a young man he liked spending time with his extended family in the Saude and Protivin area. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren. Phil enjoyed bowling, fishing and traveling to Las Vegas with Judy. He liked to work on the computer, playing cards and enjoyed collecting ash trays. Phil loved ice cream and was fond of microwave coffee and Diet Coke. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Phil died unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 6, 2004 at his home in Cresco at the age of 57.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Bergan.

Phil is survived by his wife, Judy M. (McIntyre) Bergan of Cresco; his children and their families, Christopher C. Bergan of Iowa City, IA., Jennifer A. (Max) Lamb of Waterloo, IA., Michael J. (Amanda) Bergan of Cresco, Jessica A. Bergan of Cresco and Scott T. Bergan of Cresco; five grandchildren, Brooke A. Bergan and Bradley C. Bergan; Max Ryan Lamb, Allie M. Lamb and Elliot K. Lamb; a sister, Janice Danielson of Cedar Rapids, IA.; a sister-in-law and her husband, Pam (Tom) Wilmes of Mankato, MN.; two aunts, Cora Borlaug and Helen Bergan, both of Decorah, IA.; his mother and father-in-law, Allen and Carrie McIntyre of Cresco, IA.
