Shirley A. Bengtson, age 89 of Decorah, died on Sunday, December 26, 2004, at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah following a short illness.

Funeral Service is at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 30, 2004 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, IA by Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen. Graveside services are at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Woodbury Cemetery in Lyle, MN.

Visitation is on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Fjelstul Funeral Home and on Thursday after 9:30 am at the church.

Shirley Adeline Bengtson was born September 25, 1915 in Norma, North Dakota, the daughter of Hans and Agnes (Peterson) Nelson. She attended country schools in North Dakota through the eighth grade.

She was united in marriage to Roger E. Bengtson on October 21, 1942 in the Methodist Church in New Rockford, North Dakota. To this union three children were born: Karen, Gary and Douglas.

Following graduation for country school in eighth grade, she worked in the Kenmare State Bank as a bookkeeper and cashier from 1933-1942. During that period of time she also spent one year in a North Dakota Tuberculosis Sanitarium. After her marriage to Roger, she lived with him and their family in New Rockford, ND, Owatonna, MN, Davenport, IA, Lyle, MN, Albert Lea, MN, and Decorah . She was a bookkeeper for the Midland Cooperative in Decorah from 1953 until she and Roger retired from Midland in 1978.

Shirley was a member of First Lutheran Church of Decorah from 1953-2004 and was very active in the church circles and Ladies Aide for many years. Shirley enjoyed crocheting, reading, spending time with her family and attending the musical performances of her children and grandchildren.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Hans and Agnes Nelson.

She is survived by her husband Roger of Decorah IA,; three children, Karen (Robert) Spilde of Decorah IA.; Gary (Chris) Bengtson of Edina MN.; Douglas (Connie) Bengtson of Charles City, IA.; six grandchildren, Kim Holthaus, Scott Spilde, Sara Spilde, John Bengtson, Tiffany Bilharz, and Alyssa Bengtson; eleven great-grandchildren; Kyle and Christopher Hovden, Paige and Lacey Holthaus, Jarrett and Justin Spilde, Christopher Bengtson, Morgan and Madelyn Bilharz, Alex Richardson, and Marissa Bengtson; one brother, Francis Nelson and one sister Irene Fahje, both from Lyle, MN., and many nieces and nephews.
