Barbara Bahe, age 88 of Northfield, MN, and formerly of Decorah, IA, died on Friday, April 16, 2004 at Northfield Care Center in Northfield, MN.
Funeral Service is on Tuesday, April 20, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, IA by Rev. Steven Jacobson with burial in Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah, IA.
Visitation is on Tuesday, April 20, 2004 from 10:00 to 11:00 p.m., at Fjelstul Funeral Home with a family visitation at 9:30 am.
Barbara Ann Bahe was born January 4, 1916 in Fargo, ND to George and Mollie (Johnson) Bahe. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree at Concordia College in 1937; a Master of Arts Degree from the University of Michigan in 1950 and a Doctorate in 1960 from Columbia University.
Barbara began her career as a High School Teacher in Ryder, North Dakota from 1937-1939. She also taught High School in Twin Valley, Minnesota from 1939-1942 and Glencoe, Minnesota from 1942-1947.
She joined the faculty at Luther College as a German Language Instructor in 1947. Barbara was an Assistant Professor of German from 1950-1954 and was awarded tenure in 1953. She served as an Associate Professor of German from 1954-1962 and was a Professor of German from 1962-1981. Barbara served as the Head of the Modern Language and Literature Department at Luther College from 1964-1980. She retired in 1981 and was granted Professor Emerita status. During her career she was recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship 1953-1954 and a Danforth Teacher Grant 1957-58. Barbara played the piano and enjoyed all kinds of music. Her family was important to her and she was a gracious aunt to her nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Barbara died Friday, April 16, 2004 at Northfield Care Center in Northfield, MN at the age of 88.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Gordon A. Bahe.
She is survived by her sister, Charlotte Shoffner of Taos, NM; her life-long friend, Ruth Mostrom of Northfield, MN; her nephew, John A. (Cheeky) Bahe of Louisville, KY; 2 nieces: Elaine B. (David L.) May of Brentwood, TN and Charlotte Bergschneider of Oak Harbor, WA; and a sister-in-law, Muriel Bahe of Louisville, KY.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Barbara Bahe Endowed Scholarship at Luther College, c/o Luther College Development Office, 700 College Drive, Decorah, Iowa 52101
