Reuben Styve, age 92, of Decorah, IA, died on Monday, September 26, 2011, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, IA.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 3, 2011, at the Decorah Lutheran Church, 309 Winnebago St., with Rev. Bryan Robertson presiding. Burial will be in Phelps Cemetery, Decorah, IA.

Friends may call from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, and also after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Monday morning. There will be a VFW Memorial service at 3:00 p.m., on Sunday at the funeral home.

Reuben Benjamin Styve was born on April 12, 1919, the son of Benjamin and Johanna (Rude) Styve in Decorah, Iowa. Reuben attended Decorah Community Schools. He married Ruth Oehler on October 21, 1939, at the First Lutheran Church parsonage in Decorah. Reuben worked for Minneapolis Moline Tractors in Minneapolis, MN, before being drafted into the US Army during World War II. Reuben served with the 10th Mountain Division, which helped to liberate Italy. When he returned from the service he worked for Borden’s Ice Cream, Albert’s Plumbing and then with Vick’s Plumbing and Heating, pumping septic tanks until he retired in 1984. Reuben loved to trout fish all of his life. In later years, when he wasn’t able to fish, he would make daily trips to the Decorah Fish Hatchery. He enjoyed sitting on the bench dedicated to his wife and daughter near the trout stream. Reuben was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church and the Helof Holm VFW Chapter #1977.

Reuben is survived by his son-in-law: Dick Lonning, Mason City, IA. Four grandchildren: Kim (Dave) Bresnahan, Mason City, IA; Jan (Rich) Hedrick, Mason City, IA; Kyle (Julie) Lonning, Mason City, IA; and Jeff (Lani) Lonning, West Des Moines, IA. Nine great grandchildren: Kati Rubulcava, Pablo Rubulcava, Nick Hedrick, Jordan (Samantha Hoppman) Hedrick, Whitney Lonning, Jake Lonning, Sadie Lonning, Taylor Lonning and Carly Boyd. Two great great grandchildren: Ava & Liam. One brother: Peter (Hazel) Styve, Decorah, IA, along with many nieces and nephews.

Reuben was preceded in death by his parents: Benjamin and Johanna (Rude) Styve. His wife: Ruth Styve on Feb. 8, 1994. His daughter: Roxann Lonning on Jan. 20, 1996. Five sisters: Hazel (Preston) Kemp, Ruth (Bill) Coty, Florence (Martin) Luren, Bessie Styve and Vivian Styve in infancy. Three brothers: Lester Styve, Raymond (Bea) Styve, and Clifford Styve in infancy.
