Louise Silhacek, age 92, of Spillville, IA, died on Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, IA.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 28, 2011, St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, in Spillville, IA, with Rev. Donald Hawes presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Wednesday at the Balik Funeral Home in Spillville, IA, and also after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Thursday. There will be a rosary at 4:00 and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m. at the Balik Funeral Home in Spillville.
Louise Marie (Fisher) Silhacek was born on March 6, 1919, the daughter of John G. and Emma (Klimesh) Fisher on a farm north of Spillville, IA. Louise graduated from Decorah High School in 1936. She married Wenceslaus “Jim” Silhacek on September 30, 1940 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, IA. She began a career of baking and decorating cakes, specializing in wedding cakes, some capable of serving 600-1200 people. Louise held her “Cakes by Louise” business for fifty-five years, retiring in 2004. She was a worldwide traveler and traveled to all fifty states, along with the five providences of Southern Canada, Nova, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island and Ireland. She crossed the Bermuda Triangle into the West Indies and toured all the islands, including the Bahamas, Haiti, and Puerto Rico. In Europe, she toured the countries of the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Southern Bohemia, Switzerland, Italy, Australia, North and South New Zealand and Figi Island in her travels. She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.
Louise is survived by her two sisters: Edythe Cekal and Clara Swehla, both of Spillville, IA. One brother: Dr. Julian John (Sue) Fisher, Pebble Beach, CA. Two sisters-in-law: Mary Leuenberger, Spillville, IA; and Hattie (Joe) Hauber, Ridgeway, IA, along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Louise was preceded in death by her husband: Wenceslaus “Jim” Silhacek on May 30, 1993. Sister: Martha (Charles) Falada. Brothers and sisters-in-law: James Swehla, Victor Cekal, Clinton Leuenberger, Edward (Mildred) Silhacek and Sister Regina Marie Silhacek, OSF.
