Arnold Shimek, age 77, of Calmar, Iowa, died Tuesday, February 28, 2006, at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, Iowa, after a long illness.
Mass of Christian burial will be on Saturday, March 4, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, IA, by Rev. Donald Hawes. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call on Friday, March 3, 2006 from 3:00 to 8:00 at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel, Calmar, Iowa and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Saturday morning.
Arnold Francis Shimek was born November 2, 1928 to William Joseph and Agnes (Neuzil) Shimek on the family farm near Calmar, Iowa. He attended school at St. Aloysius and Calmar High School. Arnold farmed at home and then he served in the US Army during Korean Conflict. He returned home and started working for the Milwaukee Railroad, until he retired in December 1989. During that time he also farmed with his brother, William. Arnold enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping and hunting for turtles. He also enjoyed his nieces and nephews and spending Christmas with them. Arnold was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, the Brotherhood of Maintenance Away Railroad Union and the Halverson-Giesen American Legion Post #266 in Calmar.
Arnold survivors include his two brothers: Jerome (Lucille) Shimek, Spillville, IA and William (Jane) Shimek, Decorah, IA. Two sisters: Marion Bothmer, Prairie Du Chien, WI and Lorraine (Vincel) Williams, Kansas City, MO.
Arnold was preceded in death by his parents; one brother-in-law: Clyde Bothmer and one niece; Clydene Miller.
