Sylvia Shileny age, 84 of Spillville died Sunday August 28, 2005 at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in West Union after a long illness.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday August 31, 2005 at 11:00 at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville by Rev. Donald Hawes burial will be in the church cemetery
Visitation will be on Tuesday at the Balik Funeral Home in Spillville from 3:00 until 8:00 with a rosary at 4:00 and a scripture service at 7:00 there will also be visitation at the church after 10:00 on Wednesday
Sylvia Ann (Novak) Shileny was born on March 4, 1921 on a farm near Cresco, Iowa, the daughter of Louis C. and Eleanor (Suchan) Novak. She attended New Oregon Township rural school and graduated from Rudolphinum High School in Protivin, Iowa. Sylvia married John Howard Bernatz on September 20, 1940 in Spillville, Iowa. He was killed in an automobile accident in 1948. Sylvia then married Edward Shileny on November 26, 1952 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, Iowa and they farmed west of Spillville for many years.
Sylvia’s survivors include her two sons; John Bernatz of Davenport, IA and Tom (Ruth) Bernatz of New Hampton, IA; two daughters; Suzanne (Michael) Warner of Minneapolis MN & Sally (Roger) Mihm of Ft. Atkinson, IA. Seven grandchildren: Michael (Sara) Warner, Jennifer (Jody) Nieborg and Thomas Warner all of the Minneapolis, MN area; Kathy (Shane) Bohlmann of Denver, IA and Jeff Bernatz of New Hampton, IA; Angela Mihm of Evansdale, IA and Andrew Mihm of Fort Atkinson, IA. Seven great grandchildren: Alex, Andrew and Michael Warner; Warner, Willem and Ella Nieborg; Michael Bohlmann.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her two husbands: J. Howard Bernatz and Edward Shileny; her parents: Eleanor and Louis Novak and one sister Inez Novak.
