Hugo “Ole” Schrandt, age 95, of Festina, IA died Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at his home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 16, 2011, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina, Iowa, with Monsignor Cletus Hawes presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m., on Friday and on Saturday morning from 10:00-11:00 a.m., at the Festina Parish Center in Festina.

There will be a rosary at 5:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Schluter – Balik Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Hugo “Ole” Bernard Schrandt was born on October 29, 1915, the son of Theodore “Dick” and Magdaline (Geising) Schrandt on the farm near Festina, Iowa. Ole attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Festina and after his schooling, Ole worked as a hired man. He enlisted in the US Army, during World War II, serving in the South Pacific. After returning to Festina, he married Lorraine Einck on June 5, 1946, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church. Together they farmed near Festina for thirty years, before moving into their home in Festina in 1976. In addition to farming he was a carpenter, electrician, plumber, and woodworker. He also was a 4-H leader and served on the Winneshiek County ASCS Committee for many years. In his retirement, he enjoyed fishing and was an avid card player. Ole had a great sense of humor and had an ability to recall stories from the past and pass them along to the younger generation. Until his death, he was still walking to Einck’s Station for coffee break. Ole was a member of the Turkey River VFW Post #3902 and Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina.

Hugo is survived by one daughter: Connie Schrandt, Minneapolis, MN. Three sons: Dave (Barb) Schrandt, Chaska, MN; Marvin (Michelle) Schrandt, St. Charles, MN; and Jim (Susan) Schrandt, Sutherlin, OR. Seven grandchildren: Brian (Stephanie) Schrandt, Tony Schrandt, Jeff (Sarah) Schrandt, Brad (Shelley) Schrandt, Jon Schrandt, Kerstin (Junior Reynosa) Schrandt and Eric Parr. Eight great grandchildren: Grace & Callie Schrandt, Javier & Damian Reynosa, Parker, Sullivan & Finley Schrandt and Stella Schrandt. One brother: Ted (Edna) Schrandt, Decorah, IA. Two sisters: Della Walz, Sequim, WA and Eunice Krause, Dallas, OR. Two brothers-in-law: Leo “Pat” (Bernice) Einck, Cedar Falls, IA and Dale Ott, Festina, IA. Three sisters-in-law: Norma Schrandt, Cedar Falls, IA; Frieda Einck, Decorah, IA; Rita Lou Einck, Waterloo, IA. along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Hugo was preceded in death by his wife: Lorraine on November 21, 2010. His parents: Theodore “Dick” and Magdaline (Geising) Schrandt. An infant son: Joseph in 1954. Four brothers: Walter (Orpha) Schrandt; his twin, Herb (Florence) Schrandt; Tom (Florence) Schrandt; and Bill Schrandt. Three sisters: Winnifred (Bill) Hartman, Wilma (Lawrence) Schlee; and Ann (Bill) Wagner. Seven brothers-in-law: Lambert “Speed” Walz; Ken Krause, Edwin (Irene) Einck; Herb Einck, Jerome Einck, Leander (Adella) Einck, and LeRoy (Deanna) Einck. Two sisters-in-law: Helen Ott and Rose (Loren) Natham.
