Lester Schneberger, age 78, of Rockford, IL, formerly of Calmar, IA, died on Saturday, September 25, 2010, at the Rockford Memorial Hospital in Rockford, IL.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, October 1, 2010, at 11:00 a.m., at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, Iowa, with Rev. Donald Hawes presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m.,on Thursday and also on Friday morning until 10:30 a.m. at the Schluter - Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar, Iowa.

Lester Hugo Schneberger was born on June 23, 1932, the son of Mathias and Malene (Vikre) Schneberger in Decorah, IA. Lester attended St. Aloysius Catholic School and graduated from Calmar High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. While stationed in England, he met his future wife, Muriel Stephen. They were married on June 19, 1954, in Huyton, England. They moved to Calmar in 1955, where they raised their eight children: Stephen, David, Victoria, Paul, Lori, Bill, Michael and Eric. Lester worked at the Meyer Grocery Store from 1955-69. In 1966, Lester started coaching Little League baseball in Calmar. He had a very successful career as the coach; winning all of their games in the four years that he coached. Lester always talked about those days and kids he coached. In 1969, Lester moved his family to Rockford, IL, to pursue a career at the Chrysler Auto Plant; he worked there until he retired in 2001. Lester enjoyed another great love of his life, the game of golf. Lester enjoyed every chance he could to get on the course.

Lester is survived by his eight children: Stephen Schneberger, Rockford, IL; David Schneberger, Rockford, IL; Victoria (Randy) Reagan, Winnebago, IL; Paul Schneberger, Roscoe, IL; Lori Martineau, Stillman Valley, IL; Bill (Tina) Schneberger, Texas City, TX; Michael (Danielle) Schneberger, Rockford, IL; and Eric (Julie) Houdek, New Hampton, IA; along with sixteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Two sisters: Anna (Dean) Houdek, Spillville, IA, and Kay Henry, Cresco, IA; along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends in Calmar, IA and Rockford, IL.

Lester was preceded in death by his wife: Muriel Schneberger on Nov. 25, 1971. His parents: Mathias and Malene (Vikre) Schneberger. One brother-in-law: John “Jack” Henry. His father and mother-in-law: William and Catherine Stephen. One nephew: Daniel Houdek.
