Leroy Schneberger, age 78, of Festina, Iowa, died on Thursday, January 26, 2012, at the West Union Good Samaritan Center, in West Union, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 31, 2012, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina, IA, with Monsignor Cletus Hawes presiding. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Fort Atkinson, IA.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday and also after 12:00 Noon on Tuesday at the Festina Parish Center in Festina, IA. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m., on Monday at the Parish Center. The Schluter – Balik Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Leroy Alfred Schneberger was born on January 13, 1934, the son of Hubert and Albina (Huinker) Schneberger on the family farm south of Festina, Iowa. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic Grade School in Festina and graduated from Calmar High School in 1952. Leroy served in the United States Marines from 1954 – 57, while stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA and in Okinawa, Japan. Leroy married Marcie Riha on September 12, 1959 at St. John’s Nepomucene Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, Iowa, by Rev. Stephen Kucera. Leroy and Marcie farmed all their lives near Festina, selling their dairy cows in 1997. He loved farming and enjoyed helping his neighbors and friends. Leroy liked hunting and fishing; including trips up north and to the river with fishing buddy, John Heying. He enjoyed playing cards, reading, watching baseball games, attending nut fries, Festina council meetings at Einck's Station, family camping outings where he reigned as bags champion. Most of all he loved the time spent with his children and grandchildren. Leroy was a member of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina.

Leroy is survived by his wife: Marcie Schneberger, Festina, IA. Four children: Marilyn (Dennis) Rives, Readstown, WI; Dennis (Charity) Schneberger, Decorah, IA; Sharon (Todd) Ransom, Mason City, IA; and Nancy (Kevin) Buchheit, Fort Atkinson, IA. Nine grandchildren: Thorin and Thaddeus Borreson; Ryan and Ashley Schneberger; Jon Ransom; Abby (Andrew Drenth) Buchheit, Lindsey (Ryan Flannery) Buchheit, Joseph and Jordan Buchheit. Four sisters: Germaine Schneberger, Calmar, IA; Marie (Vern) Hanken, Fremont, NE; Margaret Zumach, LaCrosse, WI; and Lois Schneberger, Scottsdale, AZ. Six brothers: Robert (Ann) Schneberger, West Union, IA; Ken (Ethel Mae) Schneberger, New Hampton, IA; James Schneberger, Calmar, IA; Jerry (Audrey) Schneberger, Venice, FL; Paul (Lori) Schneberger, Mansfield, TX; and Duane Schneberger, Twin Falls, ID. One brother-in-law: Donald Riha, Fort Atkinson, IA. Two sisters-in-law: Anna Cook, Mabel, MN and Agnes (Art) Schmitt, St. Lucas, IA, along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Leroy was preceded in death by his parents: Hubert & Albina (Huinker) Schneberger. Two sisters: Alice Schneberger and Agnes Butterfield. Three sisters-in-law: Alma Schneberger, Martha Riha and Rose Riha. Two brothers-in-law: Milo Zumach and Orval Cook. His father and mother-in-law: Martin and Stella Riha. Two nephews: Mark and Britt Butterfield.
