Richard A. Schmitt, age 78, of Calmar, Iowa, died on Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at his home in Calmar, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 12, 2010, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, Iowa, with Rev. David Beckman presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-8:00 p.m., on Sunday, July 11, 2010 and on Monday morning from 8:00-10:00 a.m., at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. There will be a rosary at 4:00 and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Richard Alois Schmitt was born on January 9, 1932, the son of Christopher and Agnes (Blong) Schmitt, on the family farm, near the Littlest Church, rural Fort Atkinson, Iowa. Richard attended St. Luke’s Catholic School and helped on the home farm, and worked at Calmar Manufacturing in Calmar. Richard was married to Charlene Meyer on January 24, 1953, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. They were the parents of seven children: Diane, Richard Jr., Loren, (Daniel), Dan, Mary and later adopted Steve. Together they farmed and raised their family on the farm near Fort Atkinson. Richard enjoyed woodworking, dancing to polkas, playing cards, and above all, being with his family. Richard was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, Iowa.

Richard’s survivors include his two daughters: Diane (David) Ungerer, Hawkeye, IA and Mary Schmitt, Fort Atkinson, IA. Four sons: Dr. Richard Schmitt, Jr., New Lenox, IL; Loren (Theresa Lou) Schmitt, Calmar, IA; Dan Schmitt, Fort Atkinson, IA; and Steve Schmitt, Fort Atkinson, IA. Six grandchildren: Dana Ungerer, Matthew, Brian, Kurt, Isaac & Graham Schmitt. Two sisters: Sylvia (George) Barloon, Fort Atkinson, IA and Gladys (Joe) Oppold, Cedar Falls, IA. Two brothers: Ted Schmitt, Decorah, IA, and Earl Schmitt, Johnston, IA. One sister-in-law: Carole (William) Burke, Waucoma, IA. Six brothers-in-law: John Dale (Dolores) Meyer, Calmar, IA; Robert (Charlotte Ann) Meyer, Lawler, IA; William (Janette) Meyer, Fort Atkinson, IA; James (Janice) Meyer, Fort Atkinson, IA; Daniel T. (Jeannie) Meyer, Garden Grove, CA; and Peter (Marge) Meyer, Decorah, IA.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents: Christopher and Agnes (Blong) Schmitt. His wife: Charlene (Meyer) Schmitt on May 12, 2001. One son: Daniel Schmitt on January 21, 1960. Two brothers: Rev. Donald Schmitt and Linus (Veronica) Schmitt. Three sisters-in-law: Virginia Cloninger, Marcella Schmitt and Nell Schmitt. His father and mother-in-law: Dan and Laura Meyer and several nephews.
