Ervin Rasmussen, age 84, of Decorah, IA, died on Sunday, May 1, 2011, at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah, IA.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 5, 2011, at the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, IA. Friends may call on Wednesday from 3:00-7:00 p.m., at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, and after 9:30 a.m. at the church on Thursday morning.
Ervin Norris Rasmussen was born on November 11, 1926, the son of Jens and Stella (Rosendahl) Rasmussen on the family farm in Canoe Ridge Township, rural Decorah, IA. Erv attended country school and graduated from Decorah High School in 1944. He served in the US Army, during World War II; Erv returned to Decorah and married Arlene Fretheim on June 20, 1948, at the Madison Lutheran Church. Erv worked for the Decorah Creamery and then at the Decorah State Bank, retiring as vice – president in the Loan Department in 1989. He was a member of the Skyline Polka Club, and the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council. Erv was proud to serve his country and went on an Honor Flight to Washington DC, two years ago. He was a member of the Bernatz – Symonds American Legion Post #163. Erv enjoyed the Monday night group and going to Team Rehab in the mornings, and then to have coffee and to visit with friends. He also loved taking family vacations, trout fishing and woodworking; making many items for his family and grandchildren.
Ervin’s survivors include his daughter: Viann (Howard) Clancy, Waverly, IA; and son: Gary (Cindy) Rasmussen, Knoxville, IA. Four grandchildren: Adam & Elizabeth Clancy and Owen & Travis Rasmussen. One sister: Mae Brynsaas, Decorah, IA. Three sisters-in-law: Olive Sims, Ruth Fretheim, and Hazel (Rollie) Grotegut, all of Decorah, IA. One brother-in-law: Russell Nelson, Decorah, IA, along with many nieces and nephews.
Ervin was preceded in death by his parents: Jens and Stella Rasmussen. His wife: Arlene on Sept. 9, 2005. Four brothers: Ray (Grace) Rasmussen, Vernon (Lylas) Rasmussen, Marlyn Rasmussen and Lester (Marguerite) Rasmussen. Two sisters: Henrietta (Casper) Sundby and Selma Nelson. Three brothers-in-law: Norman Brynsaas, Harold Sims and Herbert Fretheim.
