Irene Schmitt, age 76, of rural Fort Atkinson, Iowa, died on Tuesday, October 10, 2006, as a result of an automobile accident north of Lourdes, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, October 14, 2006 at the Assumption Catholic Church in Little Turkey, Iowa, with Rev. David Beckman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort Atkinson, Iowa and after 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the church. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.

Memorials may be given to the Irene Schmitt Memorial Fund in care of Jim Schmitt, 630 Woodland Road, Cresco, IA 52136-1118 or the American Diabetes Association.

Irene Catherine (Kriener) Schmitt was born April 14, 1930 on the family farm near St. Lucas, Iowa The daughter of Chris and Celia (Kruse) Kriener and received her education at St. Luke’s Catholic school. Irene Kriener and Vern Schmitt were united in marriage on June 14, 1949 at St. Luke’s Church at St. Lucas with Rev. Francis Schuh presiding. They became the parents of seven children. She was engaged in farming for 9 years with her husband Vern on their farm north of Jackson Junction, Iowa. She was later employed as a home health aide at Winneshiek County Public Health for 15 years before retiring in 2000. For many years she served as the Jackson Junction news correspondent. She was a member of Assumption Church in Little Turkey, where she served as a lector, Eucharistic minister, CCD teacher, and historian. She was a member of the Rosary Society, Jackson Homemakers, Right to Life, ACCW, and Cursillo movement. She also served as the Jackson township clerk and election officer and was a leader for Cub Scouts, 4-H, and TEC. She enjoyed spending time with her family, friends, fishing, traveling, playing cards, and playing Scrabble.

Irene is survived by three sons: James (Deb) Schmitt, Cresco, IA, Jerry (Kristi) Schmitt, Newport Beach, CA, Mark (Suzanne) Schmitt, Sergeant Bluff, IA and four daughters, Joanie (Michael) Schmitt-Reagan, Vacaville, CA., Judy Schmitt, Annville, KY, Carol (Craig) Steinbeiser, Allen, TX and Jean Schmitt, Ventura, IA. Thirteen grandchildren: Michael (Megan) Schmitt, Marion, IA, Shannon and Casey Reagan, Vacaville, CA, Kayla, Kelsey and Ryan Schmitt, Newport Beach, CA, Adam Schmitt, Ames, IA, Jason, Tyler, and Megan Schmitt, Sergeant Bluff, IA, Krista, Justin and Scott, Steinbeiser, Allen, TX. She is also survived by three sisters: Agnes Soukup, Ridgeway, IA, Ann (Jack) Herold, Fort Atkinson, IA. and Rita (Paul) Gerleman, Decorah, IA, three brothers: Clarence Kriener, Lawler, IA, Marvin (Connie) Kriener, Waucoma, IA, Urban (Patricia) Kriener, Waucoma, IA, one sister-in-law: Leona Kriener, Cresco, IA, and one brother in law: Dr. Donald Schmitt (Mary Ann), Marceline, MO.

Preceding her in death were her husband Vern Schmitt, her parents; Chris and Cecilia Kriener, brother, Luke Kriener, in-laws Louis and Anna Schmitt, sister-in-law, Geniece Kriener, brother-in-law, Clarence Soukup and nephews, Bruce and Ivan Kriener.
