Earl Bachelder

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, March 17, in the United Methodist Church at Castalia for Earl Bachelder, who died Saturday, March 13 at his home following a heart attack. The Rev. Curtis H. Webster officiated. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Earl C. Bachelder, son of John P. and Bertha (Osmundson) Bachelder, was born August 25, 1899 at Castalia. He attended school in Castalia and after completing his education started to work for the Rock Island Railroad in April of 1916 as a station agent. He continued in this work until his retirement in 1964. As an employee of the Rock Island, he served as Station Agent at Castalia, Ossian and West Union. During the early part of World War II he served on the extra board.

On July 10, 1923 he was united in marriage to Hattie M. Brandt. They became the parents of 2 daughters and one son, who survive. They are Bernice (Mrs. Earl Koenig) of Frankville; Irene (Mrs. Orville Koenig) of Castalia and George Bachelder of Decorah. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and one great grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a brother and a grandson.

Mr. Bachelder was a member of the United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge and the Bloomfield Township Historical society. For many years he served as secretary and manager of the Bloomfield Township Cemetery Association and at the time of his death, was its president. He was an avid baseball fan and for many years was active in helping Castalia with its baseball program.

Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Bloomfield Township.
