Rites Held For Mrs. Bachelder

Funeral services were held Friday, May 10, at the United Methodist Church in Castalia (formerly E. U. B.) for Mrs. Ward Bachelder, who passed away at the Community Memorial Hospital in Postville on Tuesday, May 7, following a year of failing health. The Rev. Curtis Webster was in charge of the rites; burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Castalia.

Mame (Mary Jane) Bachelder, daughter of James Hunter and Ida Kittenger Hunter, was born July 23, 1883 near Castalia. She passed away Tuesday, May 7, at the Community Memorial Hospital in Postville at the age of 84 years and 9 months.

On April 9, 1912, she was married to Ward Bachelder at Bruce, Wisconsin. The deceased spent her entire life in the Castalia community with the exception of one year when she lived in Bruce. Mr. and Mrs. Bachelder farmed in the Castalia community for many years.

She was a member of the Castalia Evangelical United Brethren Church and the W. S. W. S. She received her education in the public schools of Castalia. She had been a resident of the Ossian Senior Hospice since July 1967 and on April 9 was taken to the hospital in Postville.

She was preceded in death by her husband on October 16, 1964.

Survivors include her children: Helen West of Madison, Wisconsin; Ralph Rathbun of Kansas City, Missouri; and Harry Bachelder and Genevieve (Mrs. Roy Schultz) of Castalia; three sisters: Bertha Peterson of Bruce, Irene Burington and Nellie Smith of South St. Paul, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Relatives from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Helen West and Mary West of Madison; Ralph Rathbun of Kansas City; Bertha Peterson of Bruce, Irene Burington and Nellie Smith of South St. Paul, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. James Schultz, Mr. and Mrs. Charles West, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Tatro, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Bachelder, and Dale Bachelder, all of Minneapolis; Mrs. Mabel Birdsell, Mrs. Ralph Sweeney, and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hagensick and family, all of Waukon.
