Gladys Rude, age, 75 of Decorah died Thursday March 8, 2007 at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah after a long illness.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday March 12, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah by Rev. Gary Krapfl with burial in the church cemetery
Visitation will be on Sunday March 11, 2007 at the Schluter Balik Funeral Home in Decorah from 3:00 – 7:00 with a rosary at 4:00 visitation Monday will be until 10:30 at the Funeral Home.
Gladys Mae Rude was born May 5, 1931 in Decorah, Iowa to Harry and Mary (Reiwer) Brandt. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Benedict’s Church in Decorah and educated at St. Benedict’s School.
On July 16, 1949 she married Roger O. Rude in Houston County, Minnesota. To this union four children were born: Mary, Ronald, Donald, and Joseph.
Gladys worked on the family farms and raised her children in Glenwood and Canoe Townships until she and Roger moved to Decorah in 1974. She then worked at Aase Haugen for many years as a dietary supervisor. She also worked at Eastern Star in the housekeeping department.
Gladys cherished spending time and sharing stories with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She treasured visiting with friends and family, playing cards, gardening, fishing, and camping. She also loved to bake, especially lefse, krumkake, and rosettes. She had a passion for music, whether it was playing, dancing, or simply listening. Gladys embraced life with laughter and devoted her life to helping others.
She is survived by her children: Mary J. Wemark (Harris) of Ridgeway, Iowa, Ronald D. Rude (Joan) and Donald E. Rude (Julia) of Decorah; her grandchildren: Rick Wemark, Eric Wemark (Darcy), Chrishelle Stravers (Joel) of Ridgeway, Nick Wemark (Katie) of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, Jared Rude (Jackie) of Troy Mills, Iowa, and Jessica Rude (Tony) of Burr Oak, Iowa, Kristin Schultes (Ben) of Crystal, Minnesota and Cara Rude of Rochester, Minnesota; her great-grandchildren: Zachary, Alexa, and Drake Wemark; Carson and Addison Wemark; Ethan Stravers; Aidan Wemark; Kelsey Rude, Kailee Slaton, and Brandon Kesler. She is also survived by one sister, Alice Richardson (Russell) of Canton Minnesota, her sisters-in-law: Helen Borseth, Arlene Moen, Martha Rude of Decorah and Darlene Durand of Wisconsin, her brothers-in-law: Russell Richardson of Canton, Minnesota, Harold Jensen of Minnesota, Kermit Mestad and Curtis Rude of Decorah as well as many nieces and nephews.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Mary, her husband, Roger, her sisters, Margaret Jensen and Kate Barta and her brothers, Matt Eidenschink, Jerry Eidenschink and George Brandt, her infant son, Joseph Rude, and her infant great-grandson, Jack Wemark.
