Curtis Rude, age 82, of Decorah, IA, died on Monday, October 17, 2011, at the Green Lea Manor, in Mabel, MN.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 19, 2011, at the Highland Lutheran Church, 3824 Highlandville Road, Decorah, IA, with Rev. David Andreae presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m., on Tuesday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and also after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Wednesday morning.

Curtis William Ardell Rude was born on May 23, 1929, the son of Julius and Olga (Rosendahl) Rude in Springfield Township, rural Decorah, IA. Curtis was baptized on June 16, 1929 and confirmed on Oct. 31, 1943, at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah. He attended country schools in Winneshiek County. He served in the U.S. Army from March 29, 1951, and was stationed in Germany, during the Korean Conflict. He was transferred into the Army Reserves on March 25, 1953, as a corporal and was honorably discharged on April 8, 1957. Curtis married Martha Sollien on July 19, 1953, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove, MN, and they had three daughters: Cathy, Karen and Debra. Curtis worked for Kneeskerns, Peterson’s and Erickson’s Texaco in Decorah as a mechanic/service attendant. He and his wife later bought and ran a small dairy farm near Decorah in Canoe Township where he also ran his mechanic shop for many years. He drove school bus for North Winneshiek Schools for a few years (working all three jobs at the same time for a while). Curtis rented out the farm in later years, selling the farm in 2007 and retiring from his mechanic work in 1997. In 1996, they moved to Decorah. Curtis enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards with the grandchildren, going for coffee and playing pull tabs at the Nordic Express. Curt enjoyed joking around with people and always had a dry sense of humor. In February of 2011, both Curt and Martha entered the Green Lea Manor in Mabel, MN. He was a member of the Highland Lutheran Church, serving on the church council and a member of the Helof Holm VFW Chapter #1977.

Curtis is survived by his wife: Martha Rude, Mabel, MN. Two daughters: Karen (Joel) Jermeland, Decorah, IA, and Deb (Dean) Stortz, Mabel, MN. One son-in-law: Loren (Sondra) Wilkins, Decorah, IA. Nine grandchildren: Dawn Zweibohmer, Henry (Renae) Wilkins, Marcia Wilkins, Robin Wilkins, Chase Jermeland, Dennise (Danny) Kluttz, Danielle Stortz, Derek Stortz, and Danette Stortz. Fifteen great grandchildren: Caitlin, Ronnie, Julia, Elena, Joshua, Curtis, Hailey, Austin, Cassie, Alexis, Frederick, Brooklyn, Braylee, Dylan & Gavyn. One sister: Helen Borseth, Decorah, IA. Two brothers-in-law: Kermit Mestad, Decorah, IA, and Andy Sollien, Mabel, MN. One sister-in-law: Judy (Gene) Mahr, Lime Springs, IA.

Curtis was preceded in death by his daughter: Cathy Wilkins in 2005. One grandson: Justin Wilkins in 2011. Three great grandsons: Jonathan Zweibohmer, Anthony Schierholz & Anthony Williams. Three sisters: Cora (Norman) Moen, Norma Mestad and Arlene (Clarence) Moen. Two brothers: Howard (Irene) Rude and Roger (Gladys) Rude. Two brothers-in-law: Melvin Borseth and Stanley (Gladys) Sollien. Two sisters-in-law: Cora Malick and Inez Sollien.
