Lila (Dahlen) (Mrs. Vernon) Ruen, age 83, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Tuesday, January 19, 2010, at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 23, 2010, at the Decorah Lutheran Church, 309 Winnebago Street, Decorah, IA, with Rev. Wayne Hagen and Rev. Allen Hermeier presiding. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa.

Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m., on Friday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Avenue, Decorah, IA, and after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Saturday morning.

Lila Mae (Dahlen) Ruen was born on September 21, 1926, the daughter of Alex and Henrietta (Bakken) Dahlen in Decorah, Iowa. Lila was baptized on October 17, 1926 and confirmed on May 11, 1941, both at the Glenwood Lutheran Church. Lila attended rural country schools in Glenwood Township and Decorah High School. Lila married Vernon A. Ruen on October 5, 1946, at the Decorah Lutheran Parsonage. Lila was a homemaker, who assisted her husband, Vernon in the cattle, auctioneering and real estate business. Lila enjoyed flowers, trees, especially Maple trees and nature. Over the years, Lila took loving care of her husband, family, parents and grandparents. She often made many meals from ‘scratch’ and was an excellent cook. Lila “Nana” enjoyed taking trips to Cedar Rapids to visit her grandchildren, as well as attending all family functions. Lila was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church, where she served as a deacon.

Lila’s survivors include her son: V. Wayne Ruen, Princeton, IL and daughter: Marilyn (Norm) Shaffer, Cedar Rapids, IA. Five grandchildren: Jessica (friend, James Siddell) Connersville, IN; R. Daniel (Teresa) Wilkes, Cedar Rapids, IA; Amanda Shaffer, Iowa City, IA; John (Cyndi) Shaffer, Cedar Rapids, IA, and Jeni (Greg) Hartford, Cedar Rapids, IA. Nine great grandchildren: Ellie, Katie, Henry & Auggie Wilkes; Jordan & Jacob Shaffer; Ashley & Allie LeGrand; and Matthew Hartford. One brother: Arnold (Nan Larson) Dahlen, Sr., Decorah, IA. Two sisters: Hazel (Dean) Downing, Postville, IA, and Phyllis (Bernard) Wanless, Mabel, MN. One brother-in-law: Otto Ruen, Decorah, IA, along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Lila was preceded in death by her parents: Alex & Henrietta (Bakken) Dahlen. Her husband: Vernon A. Ruen on Dec. 8, 1999. One sister in infancy: Helen Dahlen. One sister-in-law: Donna “Peggy” Dahlen. Brothers & sisters-in-law: Laurence & Sophie Ruen, Adolph & Harriet Ruen, Eleanor & Joe Blegen and Laila Ruen.
