Albert Peterson, age 92, of Decorah, Iowa died on Sunday, April 10, 2005 at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah, Iowa following a short illness.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church, Decorah, Iowa with Rev. Steven Jacobsen officiating. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa.

Friends may call on Tuesday, April 12th from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Wednesday morning.

Albert Peterson was born on September 16, 1912 the son of Isaac and Marie (Johnson) Peterson in Canoe Township, rural Decorah, Iowa. Albert attended country school in Winneshiek County and helped farm on the family farm. After moving to Decorah he spent time in South Dakota grain threshing and in Hampton, Iowa picking corn by hand. He worked for McKirnan Tractor Co, drove truck for Schlitz Brewing and Wapsie Produce, where he commonly worked 18 hour days hauling turkeys. He started work at the Decorah Schools in 1954 as the night custodian and soon was the head custodian for all the Decorah Public Schools, retiring in 1977. In his twenty-eight years of retirement, he was grounds superintendent for the schools and custodian at the A & J Agency and Carlson Apartments, interspersed with many fishing trips to Big Winni and the Decorah area trout streams as possible. Albert enjoyed playing cards and loved dancing to the Big Band sounds. At age 90, he still enjoyed walking the Dug Road Path two to three times a week. He was married to Hulda Moen on January 11, 1939. After her death on November 25, 1958 he married Agnes Hildahl Syverson on December 29, 1959.

Albert’s survivors include his son: Duane Peterson & wife Carol, Champlin, MN. Two daughters: Julie Rasmusson & husband James, LaCrosse, WI and Janet Held & husband Gary, Waconia, MN. Six grandchildren: Michael Peterson & fiancé Marcia Smith, Kristin Donnelly & husband Casey, Heather Peterson, Timothy Held & friend Mara Weckman, Daniel Held and Eric Held. Two great grandsons: Gavin and Owen Donnelly. His mother-in-law: Nora Moen, Decorah, IA. One sister: Iona Omnaas, St. Paul, MN. One sister-in-law: Mary Lou Lensch & husband Harry, Decorah, IA and one brother-in-law: Craig Queel, Decorah, IA and many nieces and nephews.

Albert was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife: Hulda on November 25, 1958 and second wife, Agnes on September 18, 1991. Two brothers: Peter and Helmer Peterson and four sisters: Agnes Hover, Luella Steensgard, Mae Barth and Ida Usgaard.

The family prefers memorials to the Arlin Falck Assisted Living Home, 911 Ridgewood Drive, Decorah, IA 52101.
