Floyd S. Pearson, age 92, of Decorah, IA, died Sunday, April 17, 2011 at Barthell O.E.S. Home in Decorah.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Friday, April 22, 2011 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, IA with Rev. Marion Pruitt-Jefferson officiating. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah with full military honors.

Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Thursday, April 21, at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah with a Masonic Service at 6:30 P.M. Thursday. Visitation will also be on Friday one hour before the service at the church.

Floyd Sevelious Pearson was born October 27, 1918, the son of Per S. Pearson and Viola M. (Delphey) Pearson in the hospital in McGregor, Iowa.

Floyd attended school in Harper’s Ferry, Iowa and graduated from high school there in 1936. He then attended the University of Iowa for four years and graduated in 1940.

In 1941 he lived in Grundy Center, Iowa and was employed at the Grundy County courthouse in the Old Age Assistance program serving Grundy and Hardin counties. It was in Grundy Center that he met Marjorie. Floyd served in World War II, entering military service in February of 1943 and serving in the Army Air Transport Command. During his time in the service he was stationed at several air fields in Northern Africa and Orly Field in Paris, France. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged in April of 1946.

Floyd was united in marriage with Marjorie Ruth Mooty at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa on July 1, 1946. To this union four children were born: Connie, Karen, Kent and Keith.

Floyd returned to the University of Iowa to study Law in September of 1946 and graduated in September of 1948. After graduation Floyd and Marjorie moved to Decorah where Floyd joined the Law Firm of Houck and Miller. Following the death of Mr. Houck the Law Firm was renamed as Miller Law and later relocated to its West Broadway location where Floyd worked until his retirement. Floyd practiced law for over 50 years, becoming a partner in the firm and finally retiring as counsel. During his legal career he presented appeals to the Supreme Court of Iowa and the Federal District Court.

He was active in conservation, serving on the State Conservation Commission (1951-1957) and as Chairman of the Winneshiek County Conservation Board (1958-1974) including the period Lake Meyer was created. He was active in many organizations during his years in Decorah including the Masonic Lodge, Elks Lodge, VFW, American Legion, Rotary, Jaycees, and the Silvercrest Country Club. Floyd was a member of the First Lutheran Church serving on its Board of Trustees for several years. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and boating. His favorite activity was spending time with friends and family at their cabin on the Mississippi which has been a special place for him and his family for four generations.

Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy Sweeney; and two daughters, Connie Olson in 1988 and Karen Pearson in 1968.

Floyd is survived by his wife Marjorie of Decorah; his son Kent of Stillwater, MN; his son Keith (Agnes) of Burnsville, MN; his grandson Todd Olson of Cedar Rapids, IA; his brother Kermit (Gloria) of Naples, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
