Ella Otteson, age 93, of Decorah, Iowa died on Tuesday, November 15, 2005 at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah, Iowa following an age related illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, November 18, 2005 at the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Susan Debner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call on Thursday from 3:00-8:00 p.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Friday morning.

Ella Violet Beatrice (Larson) Otteson was born on March 19, 1912 the daughter of Martin and Anna Bertina (Sorenson) Larson on the family farm, north of Decorah along the Canoe Ridge Road. Ella was baptized in 1912 and confirmed in 1926 at the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church. Ella graduated from Decorah High School in 1930 and taught at the Hamre School south of Decorah for five years. She married Norris Edgar Otteson at the Glenwood Parsonage on November 17, 1937. Together they farmed and raised their family near the Canoe Ridge area. They moved into Decorah in October of 1970 and she worked in the kitchen at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home. Ella enjoyed reading to the residents of all three of Decorah’s nursing homes in her retirement. Ella enjoyed sewing, reading, rug hooking and quilting. Ella also loved to spent time with her family and grandchildren. She was a member of the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Ladies Aide and Ladies Circle.

Ella’s survivors include her two sons: Tom (Cheryl) Otteson, Decorah, IA and Richard (Sharon) Otteson, Stewartville, MN. Five daughters: Myrna (Jerry) Mattly, Bettendorf, IA; Laurel Otteson, Rochester, MN; Muriel (John) Lensch, Decorah, IA; LuAnne (Kevin) McNichols, Hopkins, MN and Karen (David) Zelman, Dallas, TX. Fifteen grandchildren: Angie (David Paxton) Otteson, Melissa (Mike) Zoulek; Tina (Rick) Onstott, Tammy (Brad) Burns, Tracy Berg, Dan (Dawn) Otteson; Kristine (Mike) Smith, Jennifer Mattly, Erik (Shayla) Mattly; Michael Zelman, Brian Zelman, Lauren Zelman; Colin McNichols, Bryce McNichols and Corinne McNichols. Eighteen great grandchildren: Danielle Otteson, Aria Paxton, Kaitlyn Otteson, Kevin Madison, Dustin Onstott, Jordan Onstott, Kyle Burns, Ashley Burns, Nick Berg, Ryan Berg, Cali Berg, Tyler Otteson, Spencer Otteson, Elijah Smith, Noah Smith, Anna Mattly, Liv Mattly and Tierney Mattly. One sister: Arlene Thompson, Decorah, IA. Two brothers: Leon (Rose Marie) Larson, Rochester, MN and Merton (Beverly) Larson, Garner, IA. One sister-in-law: Ivanelle Larson, Postville, IA and one brother-in-law: Art Priebe, Lone Rock, IA and many nieces and nephews.

Ella was preceded in death by her parents: Martin and Anna Larson; her husband, Norris Otteson on May 5, 1983. Four brothers: Selmer Larson, Lloyd Larson, Art Larson and his twin brother in infancy. Five sisters: Gladys Gavle, Violet Ramsey, Madeline Priebe, Myrtle Priebe and Esther Kruse.
