Helen Kovarik age 87, of Spillville, Iowa died Monday, October 10, 2005 at the Oneota Riverview Care Facility in Decorah, Iowa after a short illness.

Funeral Mass will be on Saturday October 15, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, Iowa by Rev. Donald Hawes burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be on Friday from 3:00 until 8:00 at the Balik Funeral Home in Spillville with a rosary at 5:00 and a scripture service at 7:00 there will also be visitation after 10:00 at the church on Saturday.

Helen Bessie (Taylor) Kovarik was born February 23, 1918 on the family farm near Lawler, IA to Adolph and Rose (Landa) Taylor. When she was two years old, her aunt Bessie was putting her to bed upstairs when the house caught fire. They could not get out of the room. There were some men that were thrashing and saw the house burning and broke the door down and got them out. The house then burnt to the ground. The family moved to a farm near Spillville where she attended St. Wenceslaus and Country School. After that she worked as hired girl. Helen married Robert Kovarik on November 25, 1940 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church by Rev. John Chirac. They farmed in the Protivin and Spillville areas. Helen always had a big garden with vegetables and flowers, raised chickens, made afghans and loved to make angel food cakes for family birthdays. After moving to town in 1980,she worked for Ed & Alma Wagner and at the Spillville meal site.

Helen’s survivors include two daughters: Kathryn (Terry) Bailey of Kempton, PA and Rosemary (Bill) Clausman of Waterloo, IA. One son: Ronald (Nancy) Kovarik of Dubuque, IA. Eight grandchildren: Jean (Greg) Ewart, Jeff (Lori) Landa, Mike (Sarah) Clausman, Sara and Katie Clausman, Roman, Wayne and Maria Kovarik. Eight great grandchildren: Greg Ewart Jr., Alex, and Samantha Ewart, Natalie and Luke Landa, Ashley Zilmer, Emma and Andrew Clausman. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2000, and one sister Viola Lukes and her husband Louis.
