Kenneth B. Kolaas, age 74, of Decorah, Iowa died on Saturday, February 26, 2005, at his winter home in Sun Lakes, AZ following a sudden illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2005 at the Springfield Lutheran Church with Rev. Norman Bauer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call on Wednesday, March 2, 2005 from 3:00-8:00 p.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah. Friends also may call after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday morning.
Kenneth Bernard Kolaas was born on February 11, 1931 the son of Arnold and E. Thelma (Falnes) Kolaas in Hartford, South Dakota. At a young age, Ken moved with his family to Calmar, Iowa. He was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church. Ken graduated from Calmar High School in 1950. Kenneth married Christine Johnson on March 28, 1951 at the Springfield Lutheran Church. He worked for Iowa Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids and was an auto body repairman at Grousta Motors, Dahly Chevrolet in Decorah and Egge Chevrolet in Calmar; and also was a milk hauler for the Nordness Creamery. Ken was an agent/operator for the Milwaukee Road for twenty-seven years, retiring in 1991 as a crane operator. Ken enjoyed playing cards and putting together puzzles; fishing; traveling; visiting with friends and family and coffee-ing. Most of all, he enjoyed his grandchildren…he had more time to spend with them than he did with his own children!!
Kenny’s survivors include his wife: Christina “Chris” Kolaas, Decorah, IA. Two daughters: Sherry Bachelder & husband Leon, Decorah, IA and Robyn Hageman, Calmar, IA. Three sons: Kim Kolaas & wife Renee, Garnavillo, IA; Steven Kolaas & wife Carolin, Waverly, IA and Scott Kolaas & Melissa McLaughlin, Calmar, IA. Eleven grandchildren: Kelly & Korey Bachelder; Kristopher Kolaas; Dustin and Kayci Kolaas; Kaiya and Kara Hageman; Zachary and Tyler Kolaas; Kiri & Kodi McLaughlin. Three sisters: Shirley Hanson, Decorah, IA; Elaine Halse, Decorah, IA and Rita Groth & husband Keith, Spring Grove, MN. Two sisters-in-law: Nancy Kolaas, Rochester, MN and Judy Ehler, Ossian, IA. Two brothers-in-law: Kenneth Jauert & wife Ruth, Decorah, IA and Lester Johnson, Rochester, MN.
Kenny was preceded in death by his parents: Arnold in 1953; E. Thelma in 1975; his daughter: Linda in 1955; his brother: John Kolaas in 1998; one grandson: Kamon Chapman in 1993; one daughter-in-law: Theresa Kolaas in 2001; Kenny’s father and mother-in-law: Bernard and Signa Ehler; three brothers-in-law: Karl Hanson, Edward Halse and Jerry Ehler; and two sisters-in-law: Phyllis Jauert and Gloria Johnson.
