Funeral services for Harry Bachelder, 71, were held Friday at Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia. Rev. H. W. Wolfgram officiated. Casket bearers were William Szabo, Jerome Einck, Dennis Schwinefus, Leonard Schutte, Lyle Kneeskern and Kenneth Eide. Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery at Castalia.
Harry Leo Bachelder, son of Ward and Mamie (Hunter) Bachelder, was born March 9, 1913 on the family farm south of Castalia in Winneshiek County. He died Jan. 15, at Community Memorial Hospital, Postville.
He was baptized and confirmed in 1954 by Rev. Zelle and became a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia. He attended the Castalia School.
Sept. 12, 1945 he was united in marriage with Arlette M. Svendsen. To this union four children were born. They farmed all of their life in the Castalia area. Harry had also hauled milk and substituted as a rural mail carrier. For 21 years they had raised mink. In 1969 they retired and moved to their home in Castalia.
He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and had served as Township Assessor for many years.
He is preceded in death by a sister, Genevieve (Mrs. Roy Schultz) and a half brother, Ralph Rathbun.
Surviving are his wife, Arlette, three sons, Lyle of Bloomington, MN, Dale of Brooklyn Park, MN, and Leon of Postville, a daughter, Terrie (Mrs. Doyle Allen) of Postville, 8 grandchildren: Joel and Todd; Kimberly and Vicki; Kamon, Kelly and Korey Bachelder and Jonathan Allen, and a half sister, Helen West of Madison, WI.
