Maurice Knox, age 70, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Monday, August 27, 2007, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa, following a short illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 30, 2007, at the Burr Oak Lutheran Church with Rev. Matt Larson officiating. Burial will be in the Burr Oak Cemetery, Burr Oak, Iowa.
Friends may call from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa, and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Thursday morning.
In leiu of flowers, memorials may be given in memory of Maurice, to the North Winneshiek School, 3495 North Winn Road, Decorah, IA 52101.
Maurice Harlan Knox was born on June 8, 1937, the son of Frank and Laura (Snell) Knox on a farm in rural Winneshiek County, Iowa. Maurice graduated from Canton High school in 1955 and farmed with his father. Maurice married Janice Oakland on January 31, 1959, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Plymouth Rock. Together they farmed in northern Winneshiek County, until retiring in 1978. Maurice then worked for Winneshiek Mutual Insurance Company for ten years. Maurice also drove Bus #11, for North Winneshiek Schools, where he loved and cared for every child on his bus, retiring this past spring. He enjoyed collecting toy tractors, but his greatest love was his wife and family. Maurice was a member of the Burr Oak Lutheran Church.
Maurice’s survivors include his wife, Janice Knox, Decorah, IA. Two daughters: Danette (Randy) Ryan, Decorah, IA and Michele (Mark) Ryan, Decorah, IA. Four grandchildren: Kristina (Erik) Downing, Kyle Ryan (fiance Lauren Volkert), Ashley (Dexter) Quandahl and Tarynne Ryan (Luke Carlson). Three great grandchildren: Kaeley & Evynne Downing and Treyton Carlson. One brother: Marvin (Bette) Knox, Brooklyn Park, MN and one sister: Mary Ann Ronnefeldt, Cascade, IA. Three sisters-in-law: Helen (Zeno) Kappes, Decorah, IA, Doris (John) Miller, West Union, IA and Linda Boyle, Woodrige, IL. Four brothers-in-law: Vernon (Inez) Oakland, Clermont, IA, David (Ann) Oakland, West Union, IA, Dale Oakland, Kitridge, CO, and Ronald (June) Oakland, Rochester, MN and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Maurice was preceded in death by his parents: Frank and Laura Knox. His father and mother-in-law: Martin & Irene Oakland. One brother: Earl Knox in 1990. Four brothers-in-law: Walt Ronnefeldt, Marvin Oakland, Norman Oakland and Jerald Oakland.
