Nadine Joyce Fischer Knowlton, 87, of Irving, Texas, died peacefully in her sleep at Bellmire Healthcare Facilities, Bowie, Texas, May 11, 2011, after suffering a debilitating stroke May 5, 2011.

A private service will be held in Henrietta, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to your favorite charity. The family of Nadine wish to thank the medical team at Parkland Hospital, Dallas, Texas and the staff at Bellmire Healthcare Facility, Bowie, Texas for showing kind, gentle, and compassionate care toward Nadine during the last few days of her life.

Nadine was born July 3, 1923, in Calmar, to William Paul Fischer and Emma Christiansen Fischer. She grew up in Decorah and was the eldest of four children. She met her husband, Robert Ellsworth Knowlton, also of Decorah, in elementary school.

She graduated from Decorah High School in 1939 and from the University of Iowa in 1943. She married Robert in Decorah Feb. 8, 1945, after his return from serving in the Pacific during WWII. She was an accomplished pianist, but she felt her most important role in life was to be a wife and mother.

She traveled the world with her husband and children while her husband was employed by the Ford Foundation. After settling down in Madison, N.J. with her family, Nadine served on several committees, such as the fair housing committee, which promoted housing for all people, regardless of race, and she volunteered at the libraries where her children attended school. She always had a kind word and smile for everyone, whether they were her best friends or someone she had just met in passing. She was beautiful, witty and intelligent until her death.

She is survived by her son, William Knowlton of Buffalo Springs, Texas, and daughters Barbara K. Gustavson, of New Market, Md. and Jill K. Wince of Irving, Texas; by her grandchildren Diane Knowlton of Carborro, N.C., Laura Gustavson, of Alexandria, Va., Kristen Gustavson Zalenski, of Aldie, Va. And Robert Wince, of Irving, Texas; by her sisters Sylvia Aschim and Mona Quinn, both of Decorah; by her daughter-in-law Julia C. Knowlton of Buffalo Springs, Texas, her sons-in-law Steven A. Gustavson of New Market, Md. and Aaron C. Wince of Irving, Texas; her grandsons-in-law Travis Davis of Corroboro, N.C. and Gregory Zalenski of Aldie, Va.

She is predeceased by her husband, Robert Ellsworth Knowlton (1921-1983) and her brother, William Carleton Fischer (1925-1949).

Nadine was a beautiful woman, both inside and out, and will be missed by those who knew and loved her.
