Virgil was born October 12, 1923 in the Lime Springs, Iowa area to Henry and Frances (Pollitt) Aberg. He was confirmed at the Mabel First Lutheran Church in Mabel and graduated from the Mabel High School in 1940. On November 21, 1942 he married Kathryn L. Anderson at the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper, Iowa. They started farming in the Hesper area. In January, 1945 Virgil entered the United States Army where he served in the Pacific Theater. After his separation from the Army in November, 1946 he returned to the farm near Hesper. In 1957 they moved to Newburg Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota where they farmed. For almost 40 years he farmed with his son, Brian, until the last few years. Kathryn later passed away on August 27, 2001.

Virgil was a member of the Hesper Lutheran Church, and a life member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. For several years Virgil and Kathryn were involved in the ARC (Association for Retarded Citizens). He had served several years on the Mabel-Canton School Board, the church council, and the Mabel Creamery, Meadowland Dairy, and Wisconsin Dairy boards. He enjoyed entertaining his grandchildren, golfing, traveling, and playing cards.

Virgil passed away Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa at the age of 85.

Virgil is survived by three sons Brian (Cheryl) of Mabel, Bruce of Preston, and Brent (Robin) of Forest City, Iowa; six grandchildren Jessica, Stephanie, and Benjamin of Mabel, and Madeline, Lydia, and Calvin of Forrest City; special friend Dorothy Anderson of Mabel; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Kathryn; a brother Melvin; and a sister Thelma Ira.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, November 8, 2008 at the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper, Iowa with the Rev. Matt Larson, officiating. Burial will be in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Visitation will be from 4 – 7 Friday, November 7th at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church. Memorials are preferred to the Fillmore Place in Preston.
