Verna was born March 23, 1913 in Choice, Minnesota to Oliver and Helen (Richardson) Larson. She attended elementary school in Choice then graduated in 1931 from the Mabel High School. On August 26, 1931 she married Norvel H. Burreson. They farmed in the Hesper, Iowa area until 1945 when they began operating the Burreson Locker and Grocery Store in Hesper.
In 1965 they sold the business to their son and daughter-in-law, John and Marge, and moved to Decorah, Iowa. While living in Decorah she cooked meals for the prisoners at the jail and also worked at the Whippy Dip. Norvel passed away in December, 1971. Verna had moved back to Hesper for 18 years then again to Decorah before becoming a resident at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel in 2006.
Verna was devoted to her family, especially her grandchildren who brought her great joy, and before her failing health in later years, to her church and community. She was a member of the Hesper Lutheran Church, WELCA, Order of the Eastern Star, Farm Bureau Women's Chorus, Winneshiek Hospital Auxiliary, and the Care Committee for the Eastern Star Home in Decorah. She also enjoyed gardening, making Norwegian foods, sewing, and reading.
Verna passed away Sunday, November 30, 2008 at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel, Minnesota at the age of 95.
Verna is survived by a daughter Sybil (Everett) Christensen of Madelia, Minnesota; ten grandchildren Denise (Roger) Uhlenhake, Dalane (Robert) Carolan, Melanie (Galen) Tietz, Danna (James) Kriener, Melody (Michael) McIrvin, Dolan (Kristi) Burreson, Brent (Anne) Christensen, Dawn (Michael) Schneider, Glen (Brenda) Christensen, and Sue Christensen; nineteen great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren; daughters-in-law Marge Fossey and Georgia Snyder; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Norvel; two sons John and Harris; great grandson Terry Goettsch; and seven brothers.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper, Iowa with the Rev. Matt Larson,
officiating. Burial will be in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 - 7PM Tuesday, December 2nd at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church. Casketbearers will be Dolan Burreson, Brent Christensen, Glen Christensen, Brad Uhlenhake, Dave Carolan, and Jordan Tietz.Source: Mengis Funeral Home database
