Charlotte Gertrude Drievold was born September 16, 1929 in Spring Grove, Minnesota to Carl and Gina (Sollien) Drievold. She was baptized at the Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church in Allamakee County, Iowa, and started school at the Highland Number 4 School (Bakken School). In 1938 her family moved to Hesper, Iowa where she finished elementary school. In 1944 she was confirmed at Hesper Lutheran Church, and she graduated from the Mabel High School in 1949.
She married Robert Merland Vang on August 26, 1950 at Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church in a triple wedding with her sisters. Robert and Charlotte lived on the Vang farm northwest of Hesper, helping raise Robert’s two younger brothers Arden and Donald. They had four children, having someone in school for over 40 years of their married life. After Robert died in April 1998, Charlotte moved back to Hesper. At the end of 2006 she moved to The Meadows Assisted Living in Mabel, and then to the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home on October 24, 2008.
In addition to helping on the farm, Charlotte worked at the Mabel Dry Cleaners for many years and later worked in the laundry department at Green Lea Manor for nearly 12 years, retiring in 1998. She enjoyed feeding the birds, caring for her flowers, and playing gin rummy with her friends Lizzie and Ellen, and with her sister Shirley made many quilts for donation to those in need.
Charlotte passed away Monday, December 1, 2008 at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel, Minnesota at the age of 79.
Charlotte is survived by her three children Diane (Tom) Webb of Pine Island, Minnesota, Yvonne Holtaus (Fiancé Tom Taylor) of Rochester, Minnesota, and Allen Vang (Fiancee Therese Klauke) of Decorah, Iowa; her granddaughters Molly (Paul) Temple of Chicago, Illinois, and Allison Webb of Pine Island; her sister Shirley (Wayne) Darrington of Hesper; her brother Curtis (Virginia) Drievold of Sun City, Arizona; two brothers-in-law Arden(Gloria) Vang of Mabel and Donald (Barb) Vang of Pine Island; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a son Ricky Vang, a brother Donald Drievold, and a sister Irene (Lyle) Sampson.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, December 6, 2008 at the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper, Iowa with the Rev. Matt Larson, officiating.
Burial will be in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 – 7PM Friday, December 6th at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church. In lieu of flowers, Memorials are preferred to the Hesper Lutheran Church, The Meadows of Mabel, the Ronald McDonald House in Rochester, Minn., or a charity of your choice.
