LaVonne Gehling, age 67, of Calmar, Iowa died suddenly at the Winneshiek County Medical Center, in Decorah, Iowa on June 16, 2005.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, June 20, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, Iowa with Rev. Donald Hawes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Sunday and until 10:30 a.m. Monday morning at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar.
There will be a scripture service at 3:30 and a rosary at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
LaVonne Letha Baumler Gehling was born on October 20, 1937 the daughter of Martin and Esther (Schott) Baumler on the family farm near Burr Oak, Iowa. LaVonne attended Burr Oak country school and graduated from Canton High School in 1955. She married Florian Gehling on November 14, 1956 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Plymouth Rock, Iowa. Florian and LaVonne farmed together near Calmar until his death in 1977. LaVonne worked for the Iowa State Liquor Store and the Iowa State Bank for several years before retiring in 1997. LaVonne was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church and the Ladies Auxiliary. LaVonne always felt fortunate that her family lived close. She loved crossword puzzles, playing Trivial Pursuit and the Green Bay Packers. During her retirement years, she kept busy with her sixteen grandchildren’s many activities. You would be sure to see her at all the ballgames. Grandma’s door was always open.
LaVonne’s survivors include two sons: Bob (Nancy) Gehling, Calmar, IA and Ron Gehling, Lansing, IA. Four daughters: Sandy (Keith) Kuennen, Ossian, IA; Sue (Ken) Einck, Fort Atkinson, IA; Carol (Jamie) Gerleman, Calmar, IA and Debbie (Bob) Timp, Decorah, IA. Sixteen grandchildren: Brandi (T.J.) Schissel, Mike and Steve Gehling; Eric, Scott and Andrea Timp; Brooke, Heather, Marcus and Jason Kuennen; Justin, Carrie and Megan Einck; Brian, Ashley and Taylor Gerleman. Three brothers: Floyd (Joyce) Baumler, Rochester, MN; Larry Baumler, Burr Oak, IA and Art (Karen) Baumler, Zumbro Falls, MN. Four sisters: Elaine Brynsaas, Decorah, IA; Donna Koperski, Rochester, MN; Diane (Paul) Schmelzer, Ridgeway, IA and Sharon (Ron) Wiltgen, Gaylord, MN. One sister-in-law: Helen Gehling, Calmar, IA. Two brothers-in-law: Edward Gehling, Decorah, IA and Larry (Virginia) Gehling, Calmar, IA.
LaVonne was preceded in death by her husband, Florian on April 25, 1977; her father: Martin Baumler on Dec. 18, 1971; her mother: Esther Baumler on Sept. 11, 1981; her mother-in-law: Anna (Bakula) Gehling on Nov. 11, 1980; her father-in-law: Roman Gehling Sept. 12, 2002 and her brother-in-law: Arlin Brynsaas in 1998;
