Ellen Ellingson, age 87, of Decorah, Iowa died on Friday, March 11, 2005 at the Winneshiek Medical Center, Decorah, Iowa following a short illness.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church with Rev. Steve Jacobsen officiating. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah, IA.

Friends may call on Monday from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Tuesday morning.

Ellen Amanda (Amundson) Ellingson was born on February 16, 1918 the daughter of Albert and Ella (Helgeson) Amundson on the family farm near the Big Canoe Lutheran Church. Ellen was baptized and confirmed at the Big Canoe Lutheran Church. She attended Pleasant Township #2 Country School and then graduated from Decorah High School with Normal Teacher’s training. She first taught at the Sattre School and then the Pleasant Township #2 Country School. Ellen married Lester Ellingson on March 17, 1939 at the Big Canoe. To this union, three children were born: Dennis, Karen and Wayne. After the children were older, she worked at Montgomery Ward, the Book Store and food service at Luther College. She was an active mother, helping her children with the Kilties, and Scouting. Ellen also enjoyed sewing, canning, cooking and baking, playing cards and dancing. Ellen was a member of the First Lutheran Church, where she was active in her circle. Ellen’s survivors include her children: Dennis Ellingson & wife Becca, Decorah, IA; Karen Castle, Murphys, CA and Wayne Ellingson & wife Sue, Brookings, S.D. Five grandchildren: Glenn (Laura) Ellingson; Eric (Elizabeth) Ellingson; Denice (John) Bland; Brad (Kate) Ellingson and Tim Ellingson. Two great grandchildren: Samuel Ellingson and James “Jamie” Ellingson. One sister: Thelma Overholt (Dr. Edwin L.), LaCrosse, WI and many nieces and nephews. Four step-grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren. Ellen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Lester on April 30, 1997; one sister: Thea Stoen; five brothers: Alvin, James, Alfred, Norman and Lester Amundson.
