Dean J. Eidenschink, age 64, of Cresco, IA, and formerly of Canton, MN and Decorah, IA, died Tuesday morning, May 3, 2011 University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, May 7, 2011 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah with Deacon Nick Francois officiating. Burial will be in St. Benedict Cemetery in Decorah with full military honors.

Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Friday, May 6 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Saturday after 1:00 P.M., one hour before the service.

Dean Joseph Eidenschink was born July 29, 1946 in Decorah, Iowa, the son of Matt J. and Ardath G. (Goltz) Eidenschink.

Dean absolutely loved life. He was quite the young 64-year-old. He would be the first to pull up a rug and dance his feet off to Rock-and-Roll. He loved to crack jokes and thought he was very funny. He also loved his animals, Sammy, Jade, Spicey and Sassy.

Dean grew up in Decorah, Iowa. As a boy he liked to roam the hills and bluffs along Ice Cave Road. Dunning Springs was one of his favorite spots. Among his friends he was the first one to get a car: a 1955 green Oldsmobile. His cousin and his friends all loved cruising.

Dean was a baker and a cook in the army and kept on cooking after his discharge. He worked then at Hart’s Bakery in Decorah. At home he was an expert apple pie baker. The family also loved his cookies.

Dean could repair or replace anything. With his wife of 28 years, Sheryll, he remodeled five different houses. He did everything including painting, plumbing and electrical. His last home was in Cresco, Iowa, and is a beautiful example of his handiwork. Dean also lived in Canton and Mabel, Minnesota. When he moved back to Cresco to live, he said, “You can take the boy out of Iowa but you can’t take Iowa out of the boy.”

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Dean is survived by his wife Sheryll; five children: Kevin Eidenschink of Durango, Colorado, Brenda Rose of Glendive, Montana, Lana Olson of Helena, Montana, Randy Auten of Swea City, Iowa and Anita (Clark) Halvorson of Cresco, Iowa; twelve grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and by two sisters: Diane (Frank) Checchin of Galena, Illinois and Elaine (Loren) Lensing of Belleville, Illinois.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Matt and Ardath; and two grandchildren.
