Daniel Drew, age 86, of Decorah, IA, died on Friday, October 7, 2011, at the Wellington Place Nursing Home in Decorah, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 11, 2011, at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah, IA, with Rev. Phil Gibbs presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Monday and also from 9:00-10:00 a.m., on Tuesday morning at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m., on Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given in memory of Daniel to the Wellington Place Nursing Home, 2479 River Road, Decorah, IA 52101.

Daniel Howard Drew was born on February 24, 1925, the son of Raymond and Theresa (Carolan) Drew on the family farm near Decorah, IA. Daniel attended country school in Madison Township and farmed his grandfather’s farm all of his life where they raised Registered Hereford cattle. He married Betty Mae Timp on August 31, 1948, at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church in Ossian, IA and together they had seven children: Patrick, Sheila, Mary, John, Kevin, Peter and Lisa. Daniel loved his teams of draft horses and drove them in area parades for many years. He passed this passion for his horses onto his children. He also enjoyed hunting, horse sales, playing cards and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Daniel was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church.

Daniel is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Betty Mae Drew, Decorah, IA; Three daughters: Sheila Drew, Overland Park, KS; Mary (Dan) Taiber, Cedar Rapids, IA and Lisa Drew, Cedar Rapids, IA. Three sons: John Drew, Oskaloosa, IA; Kevin Drew, Decorah, IA and Peter (Lisa) Drew, St. Joseph, MN. One daughter-in-law: Sharon Drew, Decorah, IA. Six grandchildren: Justin, Andrew, Jenna, & Benjamin Taiber and Nicholas & Samuel Drew. Two step-grandchildren: Ben & Jennifer Kidd. Brothers and sisters-in-law: Kay Drew, Hampton, IA; Rosemary Gerleman, Decorah, IA; Gerald (Pat) Timp, Calmar, IA and Sister Selma Timp, OSF, Dubuque, IA. Daniel’s uncle: Sylvester Carolan, Decorah, IA, along with many nieces and nephews.

Daniel was preceded in death by his son: Patrick Drew on June 6, 2006. His parents: Raymond & Theresa Drew. His father and mother-in-law: Philip & Alexia Timp. Two brothers: Robert (Irene) Drew and Ray Drew. A special aunt: Pearl Drew.

The Drew family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Wellington Place Nursing Home for their wonderful care of Daniel over the last five years.
