Cora J. Borlaug, 91, of Decorah, IA, died Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Aase Haugen Home under hospice care in Decorah.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah with Rev. Wayne Hagen officiating. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah.

Visitation will be from 12 noon-1:30 P.M. on Wednesday at Decorah Lutheran Church prior to the service.

Cora Josephine Bergan Borlaug, the daughter of Enos and Bertha (Knutson) Bergan, was born on July 12, 1919, at her grandparents’ (A.N. Bergan) home in Madison Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa. She was baptized on July 27, 1919, at Madison Lutheran Church by Rev. D. C. Jordahl. She was confirmed on June 19, 1932, at the Ridgeway United Lutheran Church by Rev. H. M. Normann. She attended the rural school in Madison Township #5 and graduated from Ridgeway High School in 1936 at the age of 16.

Cora was married to Vilmer Borlaug on January 1, 1945, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Waterloo, Iowa. They lived in Waterloo following their marriage – later moving to a farm north of Lawler, Iowa in the Saude area, where they farmed for many years. They retired from farming and moved to New Hampton in 1991. Her husband, Vilmer passed away on August 1, 1995, at New Hampton. Cora moved to Decorah the fall of 1996.

Cora taught in the rural schools of Winneshiek and Chickasaw Counties. Later she attended the Nursing School at N.I.C.C. and was a staff nurse at Howard County Hospital until retiring.

Cora was a member of Saude Evangelical Lutheran Church when living in the Saude area and became a member of Decorah Lutheran Church in April of 1997 after moving to Decorah.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Enos and Bertha Bergan; her husband, Vilmer on August 1, 1995; two brothers: Orvin in January of 1977, and Donald in May of 2001; four nephews: David Borlaug, Robert Bergan, Eric Bergan, and a very special nephew, Philip Bergan who assisted her in many ways.

Cora is survived by five nieces: S. Joanne Nelson Lane of Waterloo, Iowa; Hazel Nelson Braniger of Elma, Iowa; Janice Bergan Danielson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Marsha Bergan of Iowa City, Iowa; and Karen Bergan of Decorah, Iowa. She is also survived by great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
