Hildegard Schissel, 95, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011, at the Ossian Senior Hospice.

A Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, Jan. 29, at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, with Msgr. Cletus J. Hawes officiating. The Lector was Joyce Nesvik. The gifts were carried by Jennifer Schissel, Samantha Schissel and Lisa Peterson. The music was by the organist – Diane Stee; and the cantor was Jim Hawkins. The casket bearers were Raymond Schissel, Christopher Schissel, Grant Schissel, Clancy Krusemark, Callistus Schissel and Cameron Schissel. Interment was in St. Francis De Sales Cemetery at Ossian.

Hildegard Ann Schissel was born Oct. 24, 1915 at Fort Atkinson, the daughter of Martin and Dorthea (Meyer) Meyer. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith at St. John Nepomucene Church in Fort Atkinson. She also received her education in St. John’s School. Following her education, she stayed at home and helped her father raise the remainder of their family, since her mother died when Hildegard was a young girl.

On May 24, 1938, Hildegard was united in marriage to Raymond Schissel at St. John’s Church in Ft. Atkinson and moved to the Schissel farm west of Ossian. A few years later, they moved to their farm south of Ossian, where she lived until she moved into the Hospice three years ago. Hildegard was a farm wife who raised chickens, had a huge garden and helped with all of the chores on the farm. She also enjoyed sewing, embroidery and making quilts. She would make Christmas stockings for all of the grandchildren and great grandchildren and made Christmas ornaments this past year for the children. Hildegard was a good baker and liked to make jams and jellies. In her relaxing time, she liked to listen to Lawrence Welk and play cards, especially 500 or rummy.

Hildegard was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church and an honorary member of its Rosary Society. Hildegard is survived by her son, Thomas (Linda) Schissel of Ossian, her daughter, Dorothy Krusemark of Evansdale; 18 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Raymond, a son Robert, a daughter Juanita, one granddaughter, two sisters and five brothers.
