Agnes Sophia Meinert, age 99, of St. Lucas, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, at Good Samaritan Center, West Union.

A Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 am, Friday, Jan. 14, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, St. Lucas, with the Rev. Nick March officiating. Interment was in St. Luke’s Cemetery in St. Lucas.

Agnes Sophia Meinert was born June 28, 1911 on a farm east of St. Lucas, Iowa to Bernard and Catherine (Weber) Meinert. She walked to the St. Lucas Catholic School every day, except when winter weather was severe; and then, Agnes stayed with the nuns in Saint Lucas. Agnes graduated from the eighth grade. After her education she tended geese, chickens, ducks and banty hens. She helped milk the Swiss herd of cows, harvesting oats and shucking corn all by hand. Agnes grew lots of produce in her large garden, also had a grape arbor and apple orchard. She canned many apples, made grape preserves and put up a huge amount of vegetables for her families’ winter enjoyment. Agnes did the family baking; making lots of bread and her specialty was baking cookies. Agnes fondly remembered one real good cow dog they had by the name of Fido. He did his job well, bringing in the cows from the pasture twice a day.

Agnes was a hired girl from 1935-37 for the John Bodensteiner family. She was an exceptional auntie to her nieces and nephews, and sister to Tony, John, Marie and Anna. She cared for her aging parents until they passed in 1962 and 1965. In her spare time she quilted, sewed, crocheted and cross-stitched. Agnes was a member of St. Luke’s church choir for 57 years. She was a member of St. Luke’s Rosary Society and the St. Lucas Senior Citizens. Agnes took reservations for the St. Lucas Meal Site for 20 years.

She was awarded the governor’s award for volunteerism for the dedicated service in 1988 and again in 1997. Agnes entered the Good Samaritan Center in June of 2003. She enjoyed playing cards, singing and spending time with her roommate, Mary Barloon.

She is survived by her nieces and nephews; Alvin (Lila) Langreck of St. Lucas, Herbert (Arlene) Langreck of Hawkeye, Ida Krivachek of Ft. Atkinson, Joann (Linus) Brincks of Plymouth, Edwin (Helen) Langreck of Ft. Atkinson, Anthony (LouAnn) Langreck of Ossian, David (Mary) Langreck of West Union, Duane (Cathy) Langreck of Hawkeye, Virgil (Betty) Meinert of West Union, Florian (Lois) Langreck of Waucoma, and Ruth (Bob) Bily of Spillville; as well as many cousins and friends.

Agnes is preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Catherine; three sisters, Marie Langreck, Elizabeth Meinert and Anna Langreck; two brothers, John Meinert and Tony Meinert; one niece, Antonia Langreck, and one nephew-in-law, John Krevachek. The Burnham-Wood Funeral Home in West Union handled arrangements.
