Ted Hovey, age 91, of Decorah, IA, died on Thursday, March 1, 2012, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 3, 2012, at the First Lutheran Church, 604 West Broadway, in Decorah, IA, with Rev. Chad Huebner presiding. Burial will be in the Union Prairie Cemetery, Decorah, IA.

Friends may call after 9:00 a.m., at the church on Saturday morning. The Schluter – Balik Funeral Home of Decorah is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given in memory of Ted Hovey to the Helof Holm VFW Chapter #1977 or to the Aase Haugen Nursing Home.

Theodore “Ted” Joseph Hovey was born on October 25, 1920, the son of Thomas and Johanna (Iverson) Hovey in Decorah, Iowa. Ted was baptized on December 2, 1920 and confirmed on May 18, 1935. Ted attended Siewer Springs country school. He served in the US Navy, during World War II, from 1942-45 aboard the USS Suwannee. After returning from the service he worked in California and then went to Kansas with a Navy friend to do the wheat harvest. It was on this trip that he met his future wife, Wanda Hinkle. They were united in marriage on December 19, 1948, at Sharon Springs, Kansas. They lived in Oakley, Kansas until they moved to Decorah in 1951. Ted operated the feed mill for his brother, Walt, while he was in the service. In October 1951, Ted went to work for Farm Service in Decorah, where he worked until 1985, when he retired, but still continued to work for them. Ted loved to drive truck throughout his life and just couldn’t sit still; driving for Myron Krauskopf and Randy Brown, until the age of 83. In Ted’s younger years, he served as an official for the Northeast Iowa Racing Association from 1964-1977. Ted was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Helof Holm VFW Chapter #1977 and the Bernatz – Symonds American Legion Post #163.

Ted is survived by his son: Gary (Sherri) Hovey, Decorah, IA. One grandson: Tim (Jess) Hovey, Ridgeway, IA. Two great grandchildren: Lily & Kaylee Hovey. Several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews, along with a special friend: Irene McConnell, Decorah, IA.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents: Thomas and Johanna (Iverson) Hovey. Wife: Wanda (Hinkle) Hovey on March 30, 1995. Daughter-in-law: Judy (Halverson) Hovey on October 4, 2007. Great grandson: Rhett Hovey on June 28, 2005. One sister: Sylvia (George) Folsom. Three brothers: Ingolf (Esther) Hovey, Clarence (Vera) Hovey, and Walter (Lois) Hovey.
