Norbert Hovey, age 86, of Decorah, IA, died on Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at Wellington Place in Decorah, IA.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 19, 2011, at Orleans Lutheran Church, rural Ridgeway, IA, with Rev. Joelle Colville-Hanson presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Friday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, and after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Saturday morning.

Norbert Roger Hovey was born on September 26, 1924, the son of Rudolph and Gladys (Benson) Hovey on the family farm near Cresco, Iowa. Norbert attended Hovey country school #5, near Ridgeway. Norbert met Virginia VanEvery at a dance at the Inwood Ballroom in Spillville and they were married on June 5, 1948, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Together they lived and farmed on the Pole Line Road for sixty years, and raised their five children. Norbert enjoyed drinking coffee, along with visiting with his family and friends. He loved to farm and go to farm sales over the years. He also worked as a lineman for the Ridgeway Telephone Company. He also took night classes in Cresco, so he could get out and visit. He was a member of the Orleans Lutheran Church and the Winneshiek County Farm Bureau.

Norbert’s survivors include his three daughters: Sharon (Greg Thiele) Hovey–Thiele, Decorah, IA; Judy (Frank) Hageman, Decorah, IA; Kathy (Claude Moore) Hovey–Moore, Chatfield, MN. Two sons: Roger (Karen) Hovey, Mason City, IA and Gary (Susan) Hovey, Ridgeway, IA. Seventeen grandchildren: Matt (fiancé Kassia) Zweibohmer, Shelley (Matt) Bigler, Mick (Cheryl) Zweibohmer, Mitchell (Tiffany) Zweibohmer, Will (Lori) Hageman, DeAnna (Ryan) Pavlovec, Wesley Hageman, Dawn Hageman, Darcy (Darren) Einck, Kelsey Moore, Shawn (Janet) Wennes, Darcy (Sarah) Wennes, Pete (Shari) Wennes, Darin Meldahl, Jess (Tim) Hovey, Mitchell Donlon, and Amber Hovey. Twenty great grandchildren: Grace & Raymond Zweibohmer, Ryan & Allison Bigler, Janessa & Mason Zweibohmer, Seth & Ashley Zweibohmer, Kyle, Allison & Annie Hageman, Nathan & Noah Wennes, A.J. & Ericson Wennes, Ella & Olivia Wennes, Lily & Kaylee Hovey, Jordan Einck and Mya Pavlovec. One brother: Raymond Hovey, Cresco IA. One sister: Norma Jean (Harold) Peters, New Hampton, IA, along with several nieces and nephews.

Norbert was preceded in death by his parents: Rudolph and Gladys (Benson) Hovey. His wife: Virginia Hovey on November 19, 2008. One sister: Geraldine (and her husband; Raymond) Foster. One brother: Erwin Hovey. One sister-in-law: Bea Hovey. Two great grandsons: Rhett Hovey and Brooks Zweibohmer
