Judy Hovey, age 61, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Thursday, October 4, 2007, at her home from cancer.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 6, 2007, at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Marion Pruitt-Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Union Prairie Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa.

There will be no visitation; it was Judy’s wishes to be cremated. The family will greet friends, following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Winneshiek County Hospice, 901 Montgomery St., Decorah, IA 52101.

Judith “Judy” Ann (Halverson) Hovey was born on November 14, 1945, the son of Roland and Geneva (Thompson) Halverson in Decorah, Iowa. Judy was baptized and confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah. She graduated from South Winn High School in 1963. Judy married Gary Hovey on June 14, 1975 at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah, IA. Judy worked at Donlon’s Drug Store and then for the Winneshiek County Treasurer’s office for twenty years. She babysat at home, while doing bookkeeping for Tom Hovey’s LP Gas business. This turned into a full time job, which she worked at until her health forced her to quit one month ago. Judy enjoyed going to the races and sold tickets for many years. She loved being outside and mowing, spending time with her nieces and nephews and going out for lunch with them. Judy especially loved her two little granddaughters and being a grandmother to them. Judy was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the VFW Auxiliary.

Judy’s survivors include her husband, Gary Hovey, Decorah, IA. One son: Tim (Jess) Hovey, Ridgeway, IA. Two granddaughters: Lily and Kaylee Hovey, Ridgeway, IA. Parents: Roland and Geneva Halverson, Decorah, IA. One sister: Brenda (William “Bill”) Headington, Decorah, IA. Two brothers: Doug Halverson, Decorah, IA and Boyd (Jan) Halverson, Decorah, IA. Her father-in-law: Ted Hovey, Decorah, IA. Two uncles: Dale (Virginia) Halverson, Decorah, IA and LaMoyne (Edna) Thompson, Decorah, IA. Ten nieces and nephews and fifteen great nieces and nephews. Gary’s Aunt: Sylvia Folsum, Thornton, CO.

Judy was preceded in death by her grandson: Rhett Hovey on June 28, 2005. Her paternal and maternal grandparents. Her mother-in-law: Wanda Hovey. Her uncle: Richard Halverson. Niece and nephew: Michelle and Bradley Halverson and cousin: Scott “Hermie” Halverson.
