Rev. Jikan Paule (nee Vin) Kondrick, age 83, of Minneapolis, Minn., formerly of Decorah, died Feb. 15, 2011.

She was born May 21, 1927. Memorial services were at noon Sunday, March 13, at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 7110 France Ave., S., Edina, MN 55435 (telephone 952-924-4100).

Jikan Paule Josette (nee Vin) Kondrick was born May 21, 1927 in Eaubonne, France outside Paris on the day Lindberg landed at Le Bourget.

She came of age in occupied Paris and was on the Champs Elysees when the Allies liberated the city during World War II.

She studied languages at the Sorbonne and spoke German, Italian and Spanish as well as English and her native French. Until her marriage in 1955, she worked for the City of Paris Tourist Information Bureau.

Jikan Kondrick studied with the late Dainin Katagiri-roshi, heat abbot of the Minnesota Zen Center in Minneapolis.

A founding member of Minnesota Zen Center, Jikan also worked diligently to establish the Hokyoji Zen Practice Community in southern Minnesota. Reverend Jikan Kondrick received ordination as a Zen Buddhist priest in 1995.

She received certification in Japan at Eiheiji Temple of the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism, founded by the monk Dogen. Jikan Kondrick served as Vice-Abbess from its founding in 2000 and is a Dharma successor of Shoken Winecoff.

Jikan Kondrick received Dharma transmission and was certified as a Zen Buddhist teacher in 2006.

Jikan Kondrick was resident director of the Decorah Zen Center in Decorah, where she offered public sittings. Survived by her daughters, Laura Kondrick and Denise Kondrick Rud and her husband Joseph Rud, and her son, Christopher Kondrick, his wife Maureen, and two grandsons, Dillon and Cy.
