Hovey, Virginia Mae (Van Every) -- 1925 - 2008

Virginia Hovey, age 83, of Decorah, formerly of Ridgeway, Iowa, died Wednesday, November 19, 2008, at the Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse WI, following a short illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2008, at the Orleans Lutheran Church, rural Ridgeway, Iowa, with Rev. Phillip and Rev. Ginny Olson officiating. Burial will be in the Orleans Cemetery, rural Ridgeway, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial may be given to the Virginia Hovey Memorial Fund.

Friends may call from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Friday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, and after 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning at the church.

Virginia Mae (Van Every) Hovey was born on January 10, 1925, the daughter of Glenn and Lucy (Anderson) Van Every, in Bolan, Iowa. Virginia attended St. Ansgar schools and graduated from McIntyre High School in 1942. While in high school, Virginia loved sports, especially basketball. Virginia met Norbert Hovey at a dance at the Inwood Ballroom in Spillville. They were married on June 5, 1948 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Together they lived and farmed on the Pole Line Road farm for sixty years and celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary this year. Virginia enjoyed dancing, gardening, her flower gardens, canning and her chickens. She especially enjoyed bowling and had bowled up until two years ago. Virginia and Norbert have lived at the Assisted Living at Wellington Place for the last year and a half. Virginia was a member of the Orleans Lutheran Church, rural Ridgeway, Iowa.

Virginia’s survivors include her husband: Norbert Hovey, Ridgeway, IA. Three daughters: Sharon (Greg Thiele) Hovey, Decorah, IA; Judy (Frank) Hageman, Decorah, IA; Kathy (Claude) Hovey – Moore, Chatfield, MN. Two sons: Roger (Karen) Hovey, Mason City, IA and Gary (Susan) Hovey, Ridgeway, IA. Seventeen grandchildren: Matt (fiancé Kassia) Zweibohmer, Shelley (Matt) Bigler, Mick (Cheryl) Zweibohmer, Mitchell (Tiffany) Zweibohmer, Will (Lori) Hageman, DeAnna (Ryan) Pavlovec, Wesley Hageman, Dawn Hageman, Darcy (Darren) Einck, Kelsey Moore, Shawn (Janet) Wennes, Darcy (Sarah) Wennes, Pete (Shari) Wennes, Darin Meldahl, Jess (Tim) Hovey, Mitchell Donlon, and Amber Hovey. Fourteen great grandchildren: Grace & Raymond Zweibohmer, Ryan Bigler, Janessa Zweibohmer, Seth Zweibohmer, Kyle & Allison Hageman, Nathan & Noah Wennes, A.J. & Ericson Wennes, Ella & Olivia Wennes, Lily & Kaylee Hovey. One sister-in-law: Mary Katherine Van Every, Gravis Mills, MO, along with several nieces and nephews.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents: Glenn and Lucy Van Every. One great grandson: Rhett Hovey on June 28, 2005. Two sisters: Charlene (Russ) Nelson and Karen (John) Schrodt. Two brothers: Glenn Dale Van Every and Lynn (Ilene) Van Every.
