Nels Colbenson Grindeland was born October 28, 1852 in the Voss area of Norway. In 1854, at two years of age, he came to America with his parents and sister, Ingri, where they lived at Jefferson Prairie, on the border between Illinois and Wisconsin. When Nels was ten years old, the family moved to Iowa and settled in Waterloo Township. Allamakee County. His father purchased land East of Big Canoe Church. Here Nels grew up and was confirmed at Big Canoe Church in 1869.

Nels married Turi Olsdatter (Tveidt) Tweet on January 7, 1875, Nels was 22 years old and Turi was 18 years old. Turi was born in Winneshiek County June 22, 1856, the daughter of Kjersta Oldsdatter and Ole Anfinson Tweet, natives of Norway who came to the United States about the year 1853 and settled in Wisconsin, later moving to Winneshiek County.

After their marriage, Nels and Turi rented a farm in Pleasant Township for about twelve years. In 1891 the purchased 165 acres on section 14, residing there the rest of their lives. They were the parents of twelve children. Turi's brother, Anfin Tweet, married Nel's sister, Turinr Grindeland, making all of their children double cousins. Turi died November 15, 1931 of Pneumonia. Nels died September 4, 1945 at age 92. They are both buried at Big Canoe Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Decorah, Iowa.

Rites Friday for Nels Grindeland.

Nels C. Grindeland, 92, passed away about five o'clock Tuesday afternoon September 4, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Martin Arneson, following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon, September 7 at one o'clock from the Arneson home and at two o'clock at the Big Canoe Church with the Rev. William Hexom officiating.

Nels Grindeland was the oldest son of Colbin and Hansina Grindeland born October 29, 1852, in Norway. He came to the United States with his parents at the age of two and one half years. On January 8, 1875, he was married to Turi Tweet, who preceded him in death November 15, 1931.

Surviving are eight children: Mrs. Tena Otteson, Oscar, and Harry of Decorah, Mrs. Nettie Carlson, Sander of Seattle, Washington, Mrs. E.G. Ambli (Tilla) of Minneapolis, Mrs. Martin Arneson of Sattre, Mrs. Robert Barnes of Chicago, and Charles of Minneapolis. Two children died in infance, and Mrs. Helen Faldet dies in February of this year. Also surviving are 27 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Eight grandsons and three great grandsons are in the armed forces. One of the great grandsons, Donald Istad, gave his life on Luzon.
