Margie Kern, 91, of Decorah, died Monday, May 19, 1997, at the Aase Haugen Home.

Funeral services were held today, Thursday, May 22, at 11 a.m., at First United Methodist Church in Decorah, with Rev. James Dale officiating. The Rev. Kristen Kvanne will be the organist. The congregation will sing “What A Friend We Have in Jesus” and “Amazing Grace.”

Casket bearers will be Quentin Hageman, Dick Headington, Durwin Kallevang, Donald Lundtvedt, Alvin Vine and Harlan Vine. Burial will be in the Locust Cemetery in rural Decorah. The Fjelstul Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Visitation will be held Thurday after 10 a.m. at the church.

Margie (Banning) Kern was born Sept. 13, 1905, in Canoe Township of Winneshiek County, the daughter of Edward and Johana (Landmeyer) Banning. She attended the rural schools of Winneshiek County.

Margie was united in marriage with Albert G. Kern Nov. 11, 1930, at the Methodist parsonage. She was a homemaker and lived in the Decorah area her whole life. She had been a resident of Aase Haugen Home since June 19, 1996. Margie was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one child, Charmaine Kern of Decorah; two sisters, Rose Miller of Webster City, and Viola Latham of Decorah; and several nieces and nephews.

Margie Kern was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Albert, who died March 28, 1974; two brothers, Herbert Banning and Nathaniel Banning; and one sister, Clara Stafford.
